A Mary Kay Interview by NSD Carolyn Ward

Written by The Scribbler

Scrib’s note:  Close your eyes and imagine yourself at the circus around the turn of the century.  Imagine a painted lady in a secondhand sidesaddle ensemble, standing on top of a stage crafted from an old door and some whiskey barrels.  Now imagine this script coming out of her mouth.  Eerily enough, it fits.  All that’s needed is the “Hur-ray, hur-ray, hur-ay, step right up…”

“I’m not going to try to talk you into anything. It is totally your decision. I’m just going to tell you what Mary Kay has done for me and what it can do for you.  You are not obligated and I’m not obligated for anything.”  (Tell your 2-minute story of why you became a consultant and what it has done for you)

“Let me tell you a little bit about being a Mary Kay Consultant.  It is a highly professional field and a very glamorous one.  You’ll take a lot of pride in how to dress, how to treat your customers and you’ll take pride in what you do.  You’ll want to build your team in the first 2 months.  And oh – by the way –  we pay the highest commission in Direct Selling in America today and we don’t have to compete with men!  Every woman walking has a yearning in her heart to be SOMEBODY…to be recognized!”

“OK, this is how we make our money and you’ll be taught how to get customers and to maintain 70% of them, which means security.”  (Show her the Avenues of Income box of the 5-Minute Marketing Plan Sheet)  If she has a husband, say,” Do you think you understand enough that you can share this with your husband or would you like me to come talk to him?  Will you sell him or will he sell you?”

“Let me ask you this, can you make a decision with 24 hours?  I have found that well-meaning friends will try to tell you what to do.  Your making a decision in the next 24 hours is just protecting you from the ones that will try to talk you out of it.  Could you give me a decision in 24 hours?”

“I’m giving you the opportunity of a lifetime!  For $100, I promise you that if you “Suit Up and Show Up”, you’ll have more confidence, higher self esteem, cash flow and tons of fun – don’t you think that’s worth $100?  Let me show you the agreement. (Show her the agreement)

One of the closing questions:  “Based on the information I just shared, is there any reason why we couldn’t take baby steps and just fill out the paperwork and get your starter kit ordered?  If yes, here’s a pen – do you want to fill it out or do you want me to?”

Scrib’s note:  But remember what she said at the beginning of the interview:  “I’m not going to try to talk you into anything!” and yet she’s more than willing to fill out your agreement for you!
