Mary Kay is All About Recruiting

How often do we hear that Mary Kay is all about the wonderful product? “You and sell it and you can make a profit!”

Yeah, well if you’re like 99% of the other women in Mary Kay, you won’t sell much of it so you won’t profit much.

But that’s okay, because Mary Kay Cosmetics is a product-based pyramid scheme. That means that the name of the game is RECRUITING, period. Sure, they’ll tell you how it makes sense to find a bunch of people who “want to share the product with others,” and you can earn from their efforts if you recruit them.

Sounds harmless, doesn’t it? Sounds reasonable, doesn’t it? The manager of a retail store often gets a commission off what her/his employees sell, so what’s wrong with a recruiting commission in Mary Kay?

Well what’s wrong is that 1. the commission is not based in any way on sales, and 2. the goal in Mary Kay is to frontload inventory, not actually sell

Recruit, frontload, recruit, frontload, wash, rinse, repeat.

The company’s focus is on recruiting because that’s where the money is made in the pyramid. And one Mary Kay nsd is kind enough to prove it with this email she once sent to her directors in her area:

Make the “leaders” choice.

So if you want to be a real leader, you teach recruiting? It seems so.

    If you are a new IBC and bring an interested guest to a meeting your MK sales director will do everything in her power to try and recruit your guest with a huge product inventory purchase. You, as the IBC, will receive a small commission based on that huge order, your MK sales director will receive more and you, the new IBC will lose the recruit forever because once she purchases all of that product you will never see or hear from her again – because she cannot possibly sell all of it, and therefore will not be ordering ever again, and probably will return the product, taking your small commission with it and her friendship. Wouldn’t it be nice if what the senior sales director says is true – that “all you need is your kit to be a MK beauty consultant”? I challenge all of the new IBC’s to challenge those words. Come in with a kit only, have your first facials in front of a bathroom mirror, use your sample kit to give the facial, and see how many orders you wrack up. Take the check for the ordered product, deposit it into your savings account, keep booking facials with that kit and when you get enough to place a small order, do it. If you see that isn’t working out, you can at least deliver the product your friends bought and call it a day.
