Where do I begin with this email to one Mary Kay national area? I believe that she may have had 12 women there. I believe she may have sold $500. But there’s no way it only took 30 minutes! The only way she could do that is to spend about 6 minutes on the class, and two minutes each with the guests.
I don’t mind when Mary Kay NSDs actually do some work and show their consultants how it’s done. I just wish they’d be honest in recounting the work they’ve done so as to set up realistic expectations for the consultants.
Here’s how the nsd describes her class:
I know I forward emails to you regarding training but rarely write a personal note. My heart is leading me, as your Mary Kay leader, to write to you today.
Although things may seem out of control with the economy, elections etc. I want you to know that I pray for you ALL ( no matter how “active” you are) every day knowing that God is the one truly in control and all is well.
You all started your business for different reasons and I respect that but I believe deep down you wanted more! I am so grateful to this business and my career for so many reasons.
I just did a skin care class last night , which I don’t do as often as I used to since I am a National, and had a TOTAL blast and realized that no matter what is going on women love an excuse to get together.
The hostess basically booked herself to have a “girls night out” and invite her friends. I gave her my card when I was at the park and she was excited.
Ladies, I sold over $500, and half the people paid cash! Women ARE buying skin care and color and always will. It is a low ticket item that makes them feel great!!
If you do not have bookings now it is because you are not opening your mouth!!
Open your mouth and watch you business grow. Everyone can use extra pampering or cash now and you can have fun doing it. There were 12 women there so I just had them try the product on one hand and compare the two afterwards. It only took 30 minutes including sharing the marketing plan and they bought. I have at least 4 team member prospects that want to have fun and make money too!! I believe the best investment right now is my Mary Kay product that I am doubling my money on, especially if it is skin care because people reorder that more often!
Ladies, HAVE FUN and put a smile on your face because there is hope!! I love that our Company is debt free and we are privately owned so we don’t have to answer to “shareholders”. Our Corporate staff does everything with the highest integrity, I know them personally, and our future is so bright!!
Don’t go to your appointments with dollar signs in your eyes. Ask yourself, “how can I make this lady feel special and pamper her”. Work your business with a servants heart and send out positive so you get that in return tenfold.
I am so proud to have YOU in my Area and I am here to serve YOU if you need anything.
Love and BIG Belief,
nsd

Gee, I’ve heard other mlm companies brag about how they’re “debt free” also, and never gave it much thought… but now I’m realizing why that’s the case – the downline is taking all the losses for them!
I’d much rather work for a company that has a bit of debt, but pays all its workers an honest wage at the end of the week, and doesn’t expect the most recent hires to shoulder the debt of the entire company.
Oh Tracy! This was hilarious! WAIT! Did you catch that she did the “marketing plan” too??
Decades of practicing lies makes NSD’s so utterly proficient in “embellishing” that they can not even grasp how transparent their lies really are.
Each and every one of these “stories” makes the hearer that much more discouraged. And apparently these NSD’s have no grasp of that either! They toss these scenario’s out with full belief that they are “selling” their ability and exposing the consultants laziness and inability. In fact what happens is that said consultants try again, and do not experience one iota of this “success”.What is NOT admitted to, is that like Mary Kay Ash herself who touted her “10 class week”…the conditions are usually skewed in favor of the story teller.
If this NSD even did this, I am sure, she did heavy discounting, heavy hostess giveaways, told the hostess she needed to do this as a training scenario so needed AAA customers, or some other bait that would never be a-typical for the in-the-trenches consultant. Kinda like turning down Mrs. Ash for her broadcasted 10 class week. Which Mary Kay Inc. junior executive wife is going to say no?
By withholding realistic scenarios from IBC’s and Directors, and instead bragging on the rare and manipulative example of success, they transfer inadequacy and inability and self doubt to the sales force…they “shame dump”. Your message? Get off your rear end, see how easy it is…what’s wrong with you?
This is why your SD didn’t take you to her own classes. Why your recruiter made excuses for the results she got, if she did take you. How much more beneficial would it have been to understand that yes, sometimes no one shows up, sales are usually under 250, not over, sometimes you do hit a 500.00 class, but not normally. Liars never really see how they cut their own throats. The sales women give up because they don’t get results. They stop coming to meeting because they can do without the constant comparisons to untrue scenario’s…and false earnings claims…never realizing that results have been fiction since they attended their first guest event. Mary Kay’s sales leadership are masters at lies of omission.
Yeah, I’ve actually had this email forwarded to me at one point (or something very similar). When I was actively pursuing Mk, my reaction to this was “Wow!! That’s amazing, I bet I could do that too!” It all seemed so very simple that I was fairly confident that I could do that providing the right scenario. That scenario would consist of 1. having a very large ‘warm hostess list’ – meaning that I have women willing to help me and would do anything for me. 2. That I had figured out a fast class formula so this could be accomplished- yet hit all the important stuff. 3. That I could ‘stop talking’ at all the right places to I could actually do this in 30 minutes. 4. Have the right people at the class, that would stay quiet and get through everything quickly and have enough fun to order by the end. It’s like a perfect storm scenario – it never happens! I would try and try, but always come up short in the expectation, which in turn leads to great frustration and self doubt. (then what would really frost me is when other directors in my area would ‘claim’ that they actually did this and it’s so easy!)
After realizing that MK is a pink pipe dream- I now will see something like this and immediately point out the areas of lies. 1. How great that $500 in sales is – not really.. because $500/12 people is only $41 and change per person- not that great. Also, don’t forget, that’s retail! It doesn’t include ANY hostess gifts/discounts, set discounts, misc expenses such as class demos, sales tickets, gas, etc. All of that depletes the profit -and very quickly. 2. The 30 minute time frame – there is no way that it only lasted 30 minutes from beginning to end – impossible! MK women are for the most part very self absorbed and can’t help but spew how great their life is, why they love their life, why they share that love, etc. That alone would take 30 minutes. She said she shared the marketing plan – if she was doing it justice, then that alone is at least 15 minutes- at least! You can’t get across ‘all that love of the pink life’ in less than 15 minutes, it would be boring. You have to explain it all, so that the commoner has a chance to grasp just how great you’ve got it (or what you want them to think how great you’ve got it!). At the very least- she set a timer at the start of her class- rushed through the basics of the ‘show & tell’, stopped the timer and then finished up gathering orders, fulfilling orders and chatting.
This NSD (or all for that matter) ‘lies like a priceless persian rug on a rich man’s floor’ (thanks The Band Perry!) and like Raisinberry said- shame dumps on anyone who has attempted and failed or for anyone who hasn’t tried- then shame on them- they are lazy.
For this NSD to tout this as ‘completely achievable’ is insane and shameful. Just one more way for them to keep women in the ranks on that dang treadmill of Mk.
“MK women are for the most part very self absorbed and can’t help but spew how great their life is, why they love their life, why they share that love, etc.”
I personally never did that, it’s not my style, it’s corny, but I know what you mean and you are right. Many would. Of course, the whole MK culture is corny, but even when I was in it, I had my limits, LOL.
I bet everyone in reality was 30 minutes late! I recall this email from this National has been floating around for a while. This comes up here every now and then. What a bunch of sh!t.
Wait, it’s the same email, word for word?
Alaskan- it was awhile ago- but yes- it might not have been word for word- but the message was the same.
…and we all know NOW, why they lie. Who would load themselves with star level merchandise? Who would even join, if they understood they will make less than 40% on retail, after giveaways and expenses, and ultimately lose any profit they have on Events, meetings, and expenses to look the part?
Mary Kay is akin to being a gambling addict. You live on any adrenaline rush (WOE! I got a reorder on my voice mail!!!!) and make excuses that the next class, the next recruit, the next event, will pay off. It is just ironic to me that the company that wants you to believe it is so positive and supportive of women, actually exploits them.
Right on Raisin! It’s always living on the ‘potential of what is’, not the reality. That’s what kept me in and striving for way too long.
Also I thought about this…how is spending 30 minutes and using the product only on one hand pampering someone? I always thought that was cheap and I didn’t feel cared about or special.
“Don’t go to your appointments with dollar signs in your eyes.”
Only in Mary Kay would business advice include the advice to NOT focus on making money. Uh, that’s kinda why most women turn to MK in the first place; they needed some sort of income.
“Ask yourself, “how can I make this lady feel special and pamper her”. Work your business with a servants heart and send out positive so you get that in return tenfold.”
These sham leaders like to preach “Make others feel special!” but someone in MK leadership needs to tell me how raking prospects over the coals when it comes to overcoming objections, pushing prospects into decisions for big inventory packages (and implying those prospects will fail or are not serious about their MK business if they don’t get the full store), and advising her to go behind her husband’s back in all matters of MK business makes women feel special.
I don’t believe a word of this.
If by some possibility it is true? then it is the exception to the rule.
Day in day out 500. sales is what this NSD should be excited about.
So many holes in this story.
This class should of been dovetailed to an IBC to help her build her business, team.
So many holes…………
All that, AND in half an hour. Yeah, and the hostess gift was a bridge in Brooklyn…
there’s no such thing as a skin care class that lasts 30 minutes with 12 women; this was an on-the-go appointment.
So much bullsh/z, so little time….
And I have never heard the word “pampering” thrown about so much with so little disregard for its meaning. If you REALLY want to be pampered, you can spend about $100 on a facial at your local day spa and get way more out of it than a stupid Mary Kay class. Putting on YOUR OWN MAKEUP at someone’s dining room table in their mess of a house (they’re so busy doing Mary Kay that they don’t have time to clean) is NOT being pampered.
Puleeez. So happy to be free of this nonsense.
oops, I meant “little regard”!!
Heh heh, real “pampering” doesn’t even cost that much nowadays. I’ve bought two 1 hour massages for $30 and an actual 1 hour facial for $40 on Groupon in the past two months alone. All I had to listen to was trendy jazz and some Enya tunes and the LMT & aesthetician ask me if I was doing ok and if I felt alright and NEITHER attempted to recruit me. That was REAL relaxation.
Of course you can have a class in less than 30 minutes if you swipe the product on your HAND! Because, as we all know, the back of your hand is EXACTLY the same as your FACE. Not that the back of your hand is loaded with sebaceous glands, has completely different zones that respond differently to topical treatments, and reacts differently to various chemicals or anything…
As for her other comment about being happy the company doesn’t answer to “shareholders?” File that one under the “Fu**ing DUH!” category. If there were “shareholders,” the heads of the company, the behaviour of the NSD’s and SD’s could be held accountable for their deceptive business and recruiting practices. The fact that the company went private again was always lauded as the CEO’s “saving the company,” and it was. The company would have been completely taken over and forced to run responsibly if there were shareholders who valued the brand name and image.
The company is debt free……………..but the IBCs are not. The only way to double your money in MK is to fold your money in half.
