Making Money (or Not) in Mary Kay Cosmetics

Here is an email a Mary Kay nsd sent to her area. The focus here is on making money, which isn’t a bad thought. The problem is that it doesn’t align with reality. Time and again, research shows that 99% of people lose money in MLM. Mary Kay is no exception, even though your recruiter will tell you differently and will say that many women are making money. They’re not. And even the very top people in Mary Kay are not making a lot of money (except for a tiny fraction of them), as we saw here using Mary Kay’s own numbers.

My apologies.

I feel like I owe my entire National Area an apology. After spending the weekend with NSD Emeritus Dalene White (Mary Kay’s friend, 1st consultant, director, & National) I realize I have not done what Mary Kay asked me to do. She created this company for you to MAKE MONEY. The optimum word in our mission statement “To enrich women’s lives” is the word ‘rich.’

Yes I am proud of the income of many of our consultants and directors, with several of you topping $50,000 – $100,000 in yearly earnings. However I have allowed myself to group others in a box and not expect them to be rich. I have labeled this group ‘personal use’. The word alone says I don’t expect you to do well.

Beginning today I will no longer use that word nor allow anyone in my presence to go uncorrected if heard using it. EVERYONE deserves to have success and the belief that they can.

A Mary Kay business is :

1. Fun (Dave has always said that the more fun I had the more money I made).
2. Profitable (If a little girl from Southeastern Ky. can make $4 Million SO CAN YOU.)

A consultant who sells to only one person full price makes enough money to get her products for free. That act alone makes you a Mary Kay CONSULTANT. The word consultant means you consult. You advise clients. You use and understand the products.

I promise you in the future my communication tone will be different, my advice more direct, my heart and belief in YOU bigger. You can tell me all day long why you can’t but I will not hear you. I will see you for what I know you are capable. NO ONE, I mean no one, will expect excellence from you more than me. I have seen with my own eyes for 25 years how a Mary Kay career helps makes dreams come true.

The journey is what creates the person you will become. God didn’t give your dreams to your family and friends. Quit looking for their approval and asking their advice. “Listen to the voice within.” (Miss Riley’s advice to Homer Hickam, future NASA engineer, in the movie OCTOBER SKY, our Fall Retreat movie)

  1. She said, “A consultant who sells to only one person full price makes enough money to get her products for free.” The problem, as we all know, is that it’s nearly impossible to sell the products at full price. Plus there are expenses associated with selling to that one person. Gas, time, samples, packaging, credit card fees, etc. Generally PUCs only do it so that they can give all the family and friends the discount. In the end she ends up owing because she drives the product around to everyone who ordered. My guess also is that she doesn’t charge the gas, the shipping nor the full sales tax. The PUC is on the losing end and ends up paying closer to full price while her family and friends get the discount.

  2. So basically she was told they don’t want personal use consultants and to nag them to order more and is using this as an excuse to do it.

  3. A Personal Use Consultant who buys from eBay or CraigsList saves even MORE money than what she can through Mary Kay direct. With 50,000 items listed at all times, the available choices are unbeatable.

And… she helps out the poor hoodwinked IBCs who got stuck with thousands of dollars in otherwise unsellable products.

Shop eBay and CraigsList. Everybody wins!!!

  4. In other words:
“I know your recruiter told you that you can sign up as a personal use consultant, but I’m not going to let that stop me from bombarding you with guilt trips until you order thousands of inventory and recruit anyone & everyone with enough available credit.”

  5. “You can tell me all day long why you can’t but I will not hear you… NO ONE, I mean no one, will expect excellence from you more than me.”

Okay, that’s just plain creepy. People who refuse to hear you are scary.

“If a little girl from Southeastern Ky. can make $4 Million SO CAN YOU.”

Way to put down an entire region, lady.

    • Goes right along with the demeaning “big girl panties” BS.

Before I started paying attention to Mary Kay, the only time I EVER heard about “big girl panties” was when toilet-training a 2-year-old.

Oh, and by the way, I’m also calling BS on the “if she can you can too” nonsense. ANYONE can grow up to be president of the USA, or become a basketball star, or sign a record contract, or get discovered by a movie talent scout…. or get rich in an MLM… But nearly everyone WON’T.
