Pink Truth on HuffPost Live
Thursday night HuffPost Live had a segment on multi-level marketing companies that cater to women. Included on the panel were an Avon representative, Robert FitzPatrick of Pyramid Scheme Alert, and me. I tried to represent Pink Truth well. Although the bulk of the airtime went to the Avon rep (and she even got the last word!), Robert and I got a chance to talk about some of the important truths about multi-level marketing and why women should stay away from it. Watch the segment below!

Tracy, you were fantastic! Great job; I especially liked how you rebutted Lisa’s presumptions.

Clearly Nancy Redd, the interviewer, did not do any research before the interview, she is winging it.
She stumbled over the name and position of the person that initiated the interview.
Great job Tracy and Robert!

Lisa admits that Avon works completely differently from Mary Kay and many of the other MLM companies and the network/ recruiting thing is newer compared to Mary Kay! The 4 or 5 women in Mary Kay (who actually make money) started with the company at the near beginning basically at about 40+ years ago.
Lisa started Avon about 30+ years ago, she was in it before the company started the pyramid scheme and MLM part. So of course she would make decent money, she got in at the ground floor.
Now after looking at Avon’s prices versus Mary Kay’s They beat MK on prices hands down….

I don’t believe that Lisa is making the $300k that she claimed she makes. I believe the $300k is actually the “team production” off which she receives commission. No one making $300k per year has a website this bad, selling non-existent public speaking services: http://www.winnerinyou.com/

Thank you for the link! It probably is “Team Production”

So, she sells “motivation” like NSDs. Saw this on there:
Need an inspirational boost today? Listen to Lisa read poems about finding the winner in you. These are readings that made a difference in Lisa’s life and helped drive her to success. They’ll work for you too!

After further review, I am willing to believe that Lisa makes between $200k and $300k, based on her downilne’s production. She is one of the top 3 people at Avon. It sounds impressive, but it’s nearly impossible to replicate at this stage of the game.

Well it helps that she’s been at it since the mid 1980′s. She’s at the top of her little pyramid with 1900 people under her.

And the income she cited is BEFORE any business expenses. Check out the warehouse of inventory she keeps: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=2336137855842

And she’s got a link to her “Send Out Cards” affiliate number on that site.
Why do these websites always look like they were made by a 12 year old, in 1998?

My spiritual affiliation requires me to withhold assumptions…so I will comment on the observable. Mz. Avon, shows up for an internet interview on the HuffPost without makeup or professional clothing, sweetly retelling the aw shucks journey of Girls just wantin’ to have fun and sell some $.99 deordorant and no doubt, a batch load of SkinSoSoft. And aw shucks 2,000 signed consultants later, she makes 300K …or perhaps the commission on 300K…which is a HUGE difference. It only took what? 25 years.
She proved Robert and Tracy’s point. She has no idea that she has. The Host had no idea that she had. I guess people just don’t listen anymore. She’s at the top of a 2000 wide base…she’s ONE, the BASE is 2000. The 2000 are NOT making 300K!
Her Biggest seller was a $1.00 deordorant on which she makes 50 cents. Unless she has captivated the market of a small South American country fixated on hygiene, she ain’t making 300K or the commission on 300K on 50 cent deordorant. Please tell me you get that!?!? Did anyone (the Host) ASK her how she sells and how much she sells?
So would she need a SECOND business involving ” international speaking”? And if most of her downline were just gals wanting to have friends and fun, she wouldnt be making 300K at all, now would she? So the “few” who want what she wanted, have built her “organization”…and they all are just a big old goofy house of gals wanting to play makeup and get some giggles. Are you SERIOUSLY believing this?
Do you at all think that perhaps…just perhaps, the leadership of Avon selected a speaker who would modulate the “predator” label of mlm and put forth a less scary face, demeanor and attitude, to ward off the intent of this piece? Hmmm?

Gawd Raisin, you are so on point.
That was the frustrating part about watching that. Ms. Avon hogged the airtime and there was very little chance for Tracy and Robert to get a word in. Although I must say Tracy did a bang up job of getting the major talking points in in the limited amount of time she was given.

Looking at her storefront, she sells A LOT of things that are not Avon. It looks like a whole storefront to sell to her recruits. Avon is not her only business.

Does anyone really think anyone gives a hoot about what she’s going to wear? Seriously? I am simply astonished at the dumb crap on utube and other video sites. Like the whole world waits breathlessly to see what you eat and wear???

I like what Robert says… It’s a MATH Paradigm… YOu must Recruit to make money and Everyone must recruit.
Didn’t Lisa Wilber write a book called Walk in My Boots ? I know she was on “The Lecture Circuit” for a while… you know giving trainings for the DSWA and such?
I know when I first started Lisa had said that she herself paid upwards or $1500 or so to have her car vinyl wrapped… and at the time she paid it out of her own pocket…
Robert talked about paying to stay in… and asks the question… Can you make a sustainable living without recruiting? (The fundamental question)
Tracy YOU were great and thanks for putting The Husband Unawareness Program out that. Thanks for putting out there that “The Company” knows what is going on… never mind that the consultants are “Independent Contractors”.
Not to speak ill of anyone … but LIsa Wilber looks haggard from the picture/video…

Lisa’s statement about how some of the women are in it just for fun reminds me of Rodan and Fields P&P which states that only those who work it like a business will make money.
Last year I lost $2400 trying to work it like a business, I talked to well over 100 people during my first two months and finally got 3 customers.
There is such similarity between the Mary Kay language I have read on this website and what the Rodan and Fields Level 5 leaders preach.
In R&F we are constantly told to “share” the opportunity.
