The Myth of a Benefits Package in Mary Kay
This has always been one of my favorites. Mary Kay recruiters and sales directors rave about the “benefits” of being a part of Mary Kay Cosmetics.
How the items on this list can possibly be compared to paid sick leave, a 401(k) or tuition assistance is beyond me. I was also not aware that the ladder of success pin is “THE most coveted piece of jewelry in ALL of Mary Kay.” Anyone can get one, all you need is a $1800 or available credit. What is so special about that?
Let’s take a look at one sales director’s take on the benefits…
STAR CONSULTANT’S BENEFITS PACKAGE
Every corporation has a “benefits” package. That’s why most people work in corporate America – for the “Bennies”! So why not take advantage of the BENEFITS PACKAGE that your Mary Kay Company offers Star Consultants as well?
| Benefit #1 | Your Star Prize | Have you picked your prize? Star Consultant Prizes are hand-picked by Mary Kay to reward YOU. Many of the Star Consultant Prizes are created EXCLUSIVELY for Mary Kay and are ONLY available to Star Consultants |
| Benefit #2 | Your Star Treatment | Star Consultants are awarded each quarter with MUCH appreciation and showered with gifts. For example, one of last year’s Star Consultant Night Quarterly Celebrations included a limousine ride (complete with long-stemmed rose) and dinner in a private dining room of an exclusive restaurant. There’s also the Star Consultant Sash you get to wear designating YOU as an ACHIEVER, Special Unit-Only Star Consultant events and recognition on the Wall of Stars at our area Training Center! |
| Benefit #3 | Preferred Listing in the Mary Kay Consultant Directory | As a Star Consultant, YOUR NAME and contact information will be displayed first on the consultant locator system on marykay.com. Plus…when potential clients call the 1-800-MARYKAY phone number ONLY Star Consultant names given to callers! That’s PREMIUM advertising placement! |
| Benefit #4 | Free Products From Mary Kay! |
Whether it’s a New Consultant Bonus or the current Biz Builders Bonus, Mary Kay gives you Free Product when you place your qualified order. You can use it as a gift, promotion, personal use or sell it for 100% PURE PROFIT in your pocket!!! |
| Benefit #5 | Your Star Jewelry | Your Star Consultant Ladder of Success Pin is truly THE most coveted piece of jewelry in ALL of Mary Kay. It’s your consultant “report card” that displays your success – quarter after quarter. It is a visible representation of your efforts, your customers, your sales ability and your customer services. You should wear it proudly everywhere you go. |
Are these really perks of being a Mary Kay consultant, or just more smoke and mirrors to create a false perception of the value of the Mary Kay opportunity?

Heck, you don’t even need the $1800. You can pick one up for about $15 and shipping on eBay.

$15 plus shipping? That’s overpriced. Today’s eBay listings include two Ladder of Success pins for $1.99 plus $1.95 shipping.
eBay also has a whole boxful of MK official ornaments for your Ladder of Success pin selling for under $10 including shipping. Quick, DIQs, can you say “Fake It Til You Make It”?

Who needs health insurance and paid vacations when you can have dollar store jewelry and a limo ride? It’d be hilarious if it wasn’t so pathetic.

Gosh i wish someone would have rationalized with me this very question 6 months ago. It’s so sad how so many of us get lost in the pink fog. I was determined to purchase inventory “on time” so I could get a stupid customized make up kit. Someone should have nudged me and told me if I really wanted one, I have a CVS care card OR mac is in the mall if I was hell bent on spending $$$ on make up.
I consider myself an educated person and hold down a great paying job with great benefits….how can I and so many others be so duped? The promise of fanatical results.
Seriously done with MLM and all the garbage it brings.

“For example, one of last year’s Star Consultant Night Quarterly Celebrations included a limousine ride (complete with long-stemmed rose) and dinner in a private dining room of an exclusive restaurant.”
Assuming this isn’t completely made up, I’d like to know who paid for this event. I don’t mean indirectly, through buying inventory, but directly that night. I’d lay odds that the consultants paid for it. I never knew any MK event, EVER, that didn’t cost me anything. From the NSD banquet at Seminar to “Holiday” parties to Saturday morning muffins.

well- as a director I would spoil my star consultants and red jackets because I knew it was a good investment. People would want to be red, and they would want the star treatement from me. I would pay for fine dining and nice prizes that were not dollar store trinkets. But when I hear about the limo and long stem rose… sounds more like a love affair!!!
(making production and having them place a star order is worth the expensive meals, it was better than holding classes, recruiting, inventory, or ordering it all myself!)

How stupid. A Star Consultant Sash doesn’t pay the bills.

When I was admitted to the hospital for gall bladder surgery, I just showed my Star Consultant Ladder of Success Pin. No medical insurance card required!

Bahaha.. hilarious! And when I’m paying bills off at the end of the month, I just snip some of my long recognition ribbons off and stuff them in the envelope instead of money!

I had one of those ladders of success. Mine said I was dumb enough to be a star consultant for several years. When I finally wised up, I quit worrying about ordering that much junk. Now I wish I had the money I spent over the years. They can keep those cheap prizes.

For the $1,800.00 you have to spend to earn one prize in that Star Consultant book, you can buy everything in that book!

NeverWasPink and enorth…hilarious, but sadly true. I could kick myself for all the money I wasted on being a Star Consultant. Could have bought a brand new car, took luxury vacations and had a down payment on a house. Glad I am at least out now and its not too late to make my dreams come true the non-Mk way, by actually saving money for something worthwhile.

Ah, the Star! You are told of the wonderful benefits of Stardom. It didn’t take me long to figure out that I would be money ahead to just go out and buy what I was working for from the “gifts.” However, for a while I got sucked into the, “C’mon gals! We are sooooooo close to being a Cadillac unit. I know you want to be a part of that and join me in the big pizza party after I pick up OUR car! Bring $5 for pizza and we’ll have a great time. Be sure to wear your MK best so that we stand out!” My Star efforts went directly into the pocket of my SD and toward the car ONLY SHE gets to drive. She stopped having meetings at an outside locale, and started having them in her and our homes — more cozy! Ha! It was totally to save HER expenses. We would supply the treats and she had absolutely no weekly expenses!!!
