Mary Kay and Market Saturation

 Written by Lazy Gardens

Explaining the concept of market saturation, and why it’s next to impossible to build a viable retail selling business with Mary Kay.

I’ve noticed some Mary Kay training material that misuses the term “market saturation,” probably out of ignorance rather than malice. The materials claim that since Mary Kay users are only about 10% of the population, that the market is not saturated and there is lots of room for new consultants. Continue Reading →

Money Madness in Mary Kay

Written by SuzyQ

I read with irony the new ordering contest and bonuses offered by Mary Kay on a regular basis. Order more and convince your team members to order more and earn a bonus, starting with $100. Order more and get a dollar store trinket. In previous days, I might have jumped all over this and in turn encouraged my unit to get on the stick with their team members.

In Mary Kay, money is real when you earn it. It is not when you spend it. When you spend it, it just means you entered some numbers off a credit card onto a computer screen, or wrote out a check from your Mary Kay account (with the Mary Kay Connections check). Continue Reading →

How to Make $100,000 a Year as a New Director

Mary Kay nsd Cheryl Warfield tells women they can make $100,000 a year as a brand new Mary Kay sales director.

Cheryl uses a little Mary Kay Math to come up with her $100,000 figure, and of course, she pays no attention to the fact that the sales director has expenses that must be paid out of that fictional income! I love that her example was Allison LaMarr, who later became the most famous Mary Kay Failure. Here’s how Cheryl Warfield introduces the chart to her area: Continue Reading →

Another Mary Kay Sales Director Lying About Her Income

Here’s what a current Mary Kay sales director posted on her personal website:

I also am an Indpendent (sic) Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics. I quit my full-time job more than 2 years ago and I’m making an executive income while working from home with my Mary Kay business. It’s amazing and more info can be found through my website: xxxxxxxxxxx. Continue Reading →

Counting the Real Cost of Mary Kay

Written by Raisinberry

If you have been in Mary Kay for any length of time you are aware of a typical meeting involving a “scoreboard line up” of top sellers in your unit. The count up begins for what was sold, and generally anybody over $300 gets to come down front and tell their sales success. $300 a week in sales is supposedly a Sapphire Star Consultant, provided she ordered 1800.00 wholesale during the quarter.

The problem is, there are very few real business women in Mary Kay. Your Director will have you split your sales 60/40 as if that ratio has anything to do with actual accounting. You will note that even a weekly summary sheet does not track your real expenses and real profit. No, you are to record your 60/40 split as if the number remaining from the subtraction of your restocking amount reflected your actual profit. Nothing could be further from the truth. What Don’t You Get About Mary Kay?

Written by sadnpink

I know there are many of you reading this that are lurkers or naysayers.  You believe that MLM’s really do work and that most of us are “loosers,” “whiners” or just didn’t work hard enough.  Maybe you just don’t understand that those of us who gathered here are trying to share our experiences to represent the other side of multi-level marketing.

Many who have come here have experienced serious debt and broken dreams.  I am one of those who woke up to find that I had wasted a good deal of time trying to build an organization that would always have to be rebuilt over and over again.  I speak not only from my experience in three different MLM’s but also as an older woman who has worked in many different opportunities throughout my life.  There is no comparison between the money you can make in an MLM and the money which can be earned by a solid job.

The Numbers Don’t Lie in Mary Kay

Written by JTA

“The numbers don’t lie…” How many times have we heard that one? Well, the numbers are precisely what caused me to become disillusioned about this business and this company. A person in their right mind would not be able to look at the numbers I see and continue on.

Not so much my personal numbers, although I spent an extraordinary amount of time working, doing the “short term sacrifice for long term gain” thing. My schedule was 8am-10pm M-F, I worked on Saturday, too, and took off from 6pm Sat to 6pm Sunday and then got back on the phone. I was taught by other NSDs to only ‘relax’ those 24 hours so that I could become NSD more quickly. Continue Reading →

False Earnings Claims in Mary Kay

One of the most frustrating parts about Mary Kay Cosmetics is the deception during the recruiting process.

“Doesn’t this look eeeeeeasy????”

“All you do is squirt and smile! Squirt and smile!”

“I just know you’d be great at doing what I do!” Continue Reading →

Life Happens Outside of Mary Kay… and It’s Expensive

 Written by PinkPeace

How do we get into so much debt in Mary Kay? Honestly, it’s not even so much the business expenses themselves, although they can be a bear. We have real-life bills to pay, but our Mary Kay income doesn’t begin to cover them. But if you’ve quit your real job (doh!) and have nothing else to fall back on, what do you do when Billy needs braces and the hot water heater sprung a leak? Credit cards to the rescue!

I didn’t have a big enough bank account to pay my “real-life” bills, so . . . Kids’ doctor visits? VISA. Insurance premiums? American Express. Groceries? MasterCard. Gas? Discover. And don’t forget those awesome convenience checks that come every month. They really help out to pay for mortgage and utilities. Continue Reading →

Proof That 99% Lose Money in MLMs

Robert FitzPatrick of Pyramid Scheme Alert has conducted extensive research on multi-level marketing companies (MLMs). The research can be difficult with companies like Mary Kay, which are privately owned and therefore don’t release hardly any information about the dismal earnings of the sales force. (Who would want to admit the financial truth unless forced to? And don’tcha think that if consultants were doing so well in Mary Kay across the board, that the company would be out there touting these statistics left and right?)

On the other hand, certain companies using MLM models that are similar to Mary Kay’s way of doing business, do release public information about their representatives. Robert studied figures for Amway (Quixtar), Nuskin, Nikken, Melaleuca, Reliv, Arbonne, Free Life International and Cyberwize.com. Continue Reading →
