As with any good multi-level marketing company or pyramid scheme, Mary Kay is a pro at offering prizes and events which encourage distributors to continuously order products, whether they will ever be sold or not.

This section highlights some of those cheap, yet highly successful, ploys at getting Mary Kay consultants excited, engaged, and ordering more products:

  • Prizes - From plastic trinkets to the not-so-free cars and the low-quality diamond jewelry, Mary Kay has it down to a science.
  • Mary Kay Cars - All about those not-so-free Mary Kay cars and the rules for earning them and keeping them (sort of)
  • Seminar - The annual rah-rah session in Dallas, Texas, where thousands of consultants and sales directors become energized to stay on the hamster wheel for another year.
  • Career Conference - The spring event held in cities around the country and meant to encourage consultants to order lots of products before the end of June.

And a related topic...Contests and Gimmicks ... What's the latest company ploy to encourage more recruiting and ordering?

    hi

  • Blue Moon  - "Add-A-Diamond" ring

Ok,I "earned" the diamonds in my ring. Filled that, and then started earning them on a necklace pendant. 7 diamonds on the ring, 4 in the necklace. I decide to see what they were worth. Smythe would only offer $47 for them both! They said they have too many diamonds, but they'd give me $47 for the gold.

Очень интересно... если бы еще и правда была))

  • CaringForYourHealth  - Prizes with MK. what a joke

Yeah I earned prizes too to include the coveted Queen's Court of Sales ring and lots of bags and more crap to put everywhere. I had a hell of a time finding homes for much of what I had - bags, office stuff etc - and thankfully now I am free of it for the most part.
The so called prizes are a real joke. They are far from "Prizes."

  • nomorefakingit  - Star Consultant Functions

My director held quarterly star consultant functions. Well, I figured it out that I can go out to dinner, get my nails done or have a massage for a lot less than $1800! Mary Kay preys on women who are going through tough life situations. I was in an emotionally abusive marriage, and was lured in with promises of love and support from my Mary Kay sisters.
Now I have a wonderful man who helped me see the truth behind my manipulative director.
Bad bad director.... she calls her customers stupid bitches behind their backs. So sad it took me $20000 worth of credit card debt to figure out I was really buying myself all those lovely star consultant prizes. I especially love the "desk set", complete with letter opener. I'd like to stick that up my director's butt.

    This was Go-Give at it's ahem....best!

The funny thing about trolls is that Mary Kay doesn't really need any. They do a pretty good job of being nasty all by themselves!

Alison?.... Alison?.... Alison?... (Professor Oneless here, taking attendance) Alison?.....

Well PTU ladies, apparently our little miss Alison has decided to cut class today. Pity, she was so ignorant.

One can hope that she'll come back and get the education she desperately needs.

    Carry on!

I am currently an IBC and I received the prestigious title of "Miss Go Give" at our Unit meeting over the summer and got to stand at the arena in Dallas over the summer and I feel like an idiot. I kept saying something just doesn't feel right, these meetings are just too wierd, they are not giving out totally accurate information. But I kept going along with it. Dallas is what sealed that deal for me. All those women in stilettos heading for the Mary Kay Mecca. I just couldn't believe it. All that money I invested in everything MK related, and I didn't even break even. . .they just wanted more. . .Sell, sell, sell and get this prestigious ring that will turn your finger green. These women in Dallas will mow you over to get it!! Oh my gosh, my parents always taught me to go with my gut, and I ignored it and recruited my best friend, tried to feed her all that crap and I believe I was given the Miss Go Give award to "encourage" me to do more. I don't think so. . .this is a cult if I have ever seen one. OMG. OMG. OMG. On my way back on the plane, I told the MK lady beside me that all the announcers at the awards shows and at the plant were all so happy, it was just so wierd. And with the strangest smile on her face she said, you are just thinking about it too much. ..SHe lived in Chicago and said she had been approached to sell MK 150 TIMES! I kept looking around the arena and the probability of all the nonsense they were feeding me and kept chowing down on the candied almonds, peppered with all this crap!! I'M AN IDIOT!

    Hi MaryKaycreeper,
You are not an idiot. You are very smart to see through the facade so quickly.
I believed my SD's lies for years.
MK women are master manipulators. They are TRAINED - YEAR ROUND - to find your emotional hot buttons and use that information to get you to do what they want. Which is mostly ordering product. SD's must get their units to order $4000 worth of product each month JUST to keep their Unit. (How messed up is that??)
You have already seen through them. You are way ahead of the game.
You can send back the amount of product you have ordered in the last 12 months and get 90% of wholesale back.
Ask any questions you want on the Discussion Board. There are former IBC's right up to former NIQ's here and they can answer ANY question you have.
Good Luck and Welcome to Pink Truth. So glad you have found your way here.

  • dontwannabepink

So I got an email today from my soon to be former NSD about the "cool" New Year's party/training on how to build your business. It's going to be at the usual meeting place but for the "honor" of attending you get to pay $80. :0 Oh, and of course I was also encouraged to send in that end of month order! I am so glad I'm getting out!

Dand, I see that picture of MK Ash above, what did that woman use to stay so wrinkle free? Formaldahide, probably, soaked her face every night, you know she didn't get that tight from the Basic skin care line or the Timewise.

  • beebee

    *Dang

  • The Scribbler

Beebee, do a Google image search for Mary Kay Ash and you'll see a few pictures tucked in there that aren't airbrushed/digitally manipulated beyond belief.

Even Mary Kay Ash wasn't above getting wrinkles. ;)

    lol! :D

I know, just being facetious, lol.

She would not have been a bad-looking woman were it not for all of the layers of war paint and the wig; she obviously was not a proponent of the natural look. Apparently, she used to hang with Liberace; one can confirm this by looking at her.

I have been looking over the PT site some more; I am still reeling from the shock of the credit card debacle. These poor young women; my heart goes out to them, MK is MUCH worse than when I was in it, and it sucked during my two five minute tenures in the early 90s, lol.

People went to TX to the annual "clap and cry" fest ("clap and cry" lol, read that on here, I LOVE IT!) when I was a consultant and came back to our meeting to talk about it. My recruiter, a very, sweet, nice (albeit naive) lady, came back and talked about how Mary Kay was a nice, compassionate woman and she started choking up and crying in front of all of us. Egads! I felt very uncomfortable, and I feel uncomfortable even thinking about it now, and then, like now, upon seeing this, I was relieved that I sat out that gaudy clownfest.

I would not be surprised if VISA stops doing business with MK as I am sure that VISA is incurring loads of bad debt from ex-consultants who cannot pay their high cc bills. Sorry to keep harping on this, I cannot get over it.

A big problem is with the SDs and NSDs. MK should get rid of ALL SDs and NSDs entirely. The consultants should be able to order from the company and sell their wares, and maybe get a percent or two if they do recruit from their recruit's sales, but NOT from the people that their personal downline recruit, it should only go one step down.

This way, the focus would be on sales, most would understand that it is a hobby that will give you a little money, and it would cut out all of this unethical behavior and backstabbing. These directors and their various forms of drama are just a big distraction, and I do not see how NSD do the company any good, except to be rabbits that lures people at the bottom to recruit, recruit, recruit! The consultants that are under these NSDd should get together and mutiny, like a union. Demand change, make a list of demands, or they will IMMEDIATELY STOP SELLING AND RECRUITING. The many on the bottom have the power, they just have to get in touch with one another and organize.

But of course MK would still tank as cosmetics are not a viable option for a small business owner, not only is MK saturated, but so is the cosmetics industry. MK is not good enough to compete with high-end lines, and their image is too conservative to get a younger crowd; personally, I use mostly MAC.

ANY business ANYWHERE that focuses on recruiting, pushes you to to go seminars, meetings, to buy tapes, books and other schlock is a SCAM.

I sell spices through a company that does not push you to do anything or really bother you at all. I DO NOT recruit, ever, unless someone approached me and wanted to get in. It gives me extra money to help pay off my student debt; it's debt, but at least I have a something to show for it.

I do not have a problem with legitimate small business people who want to work for themselves, it's these SCAM companies that focus on recruiting and buying tapes and going to these meetings and functions.

    Hello Beebee,
Welcome to Pink Truth. Glad you're here. B)

  • beebee

Thanks ican, I have enjoyed reading your posts as well. :)

In the 21st century with the advent of the internet, and good sites like this one, all of these scams like MK, $cientology, Amway, etc should be on their way out in the coming years.

MKs directors' business practices look just like the fuzzy math and fake number crunching that Kenneth Lay and Jeff Skilling from Enron were doing. Those false numbers will only carry you for so long, everything has a paper trail.

  • FreefromPinkatLast

The more I read on this website, the happier I am that I left Mary Kay! Congrats to everyone on this site for getting out of the Pink Fog and thank you for this site...it sure made my decision a lot easier!!! :cheer:

  • formerblusuit  - Class ring 2009

Wow I became a New sales Director in July of 2009 and when I finally recived my long awaited class ring, I got it, and held it in my hand... honestly it felt too light.I thought to myself after all I have given this company and the money I made them $22,000 to be exact this should be real gold, like a class ring you get when you graduate. Not the cracker jack box ring I recieved,It felt like plastic.
