Mary Kay Directors: Don't place that big personal order to meet minimum production PDF Print E-mail

Well directors, the end of the month is coming again.  For those not in the know, Mary Kay directors do have quotas and must have total unit production of at least  $4,000 per month.  If they miss a month, that is okay but they must make it the following month.  So directors, is it your ‘off’ month?  Meaning, did you miss production last month, so you HAVE to make it this month?  HAVE to hit $4,000 or you will ‘lose’ your directorship?

In the past, that has meant that you pull out all the stops, like do a personal blitz where you warm chatter the free world and facial everyone you can, hoping to recruit one or some and bring them in with big inventory.  Once in a while, that works.

Or, you run a big promotion with your unit.  Never mind that your unit is miniscule and doesn’t produce to begin with, which is why you keep having low numbers. So you run the end-all be-all promotion, and maybe a few people participate, but it is never enough.

New Mary Kay Products for December 16, 2009 PDF Print E-mail

I haven't said much about the new and discontinued products in Mary Kay in a while. Frankly, I just don't care a whole lot about the products themselves. But here's a peek at the products that are coming on the December 16, 2009 order form. Notice that Mary Kay is an expert at "everything old is new again." Fragrance free Satin Hands wouldn't be necesary if they had just kept the original formula. (And consultants beware: The peach satin hands is changing in summer!!! And following that, MK will be making limited edition scents of satin hands.) A mask??? I thought Timewise was supposed to eliminate the need for a mask. Eyebrow gel? Now that's a blast from the past!

New Regular Line Products

  • Fragrance Free Satin Hands® Pampering Set ($34 suggested retail) It’s a new twist on a best-seller! The new Satin Hands® Pampering Set in Fragrance Free. Get touchable, soft hands as easy as 1-2-3 with this all-time customer favorite. The set includes:
    • Fragrance Free Satin Hands® Hand Softener, which is Extra Emollient Night Cream with a new name and without the color and scent. It leaves hands soft and silky and helps maintain natural moisture.
    • Fragrance Free Satin Hands® Satin Smoothie® Hand Scrub to cleanse and exfoliate the skin.
    • Fragrance Free Satin Hands® Hand Cream in a new rich, silky formula that now moisturizes for 24 hours and lasts through several hand washes! Also will be sold separately for $10 each (suggested retail).
  • TimeWise® Even Complexion Mask ($20 suggested retail) Pamper, soften and brighten in one step. The new TimeWise® Even Complexion Mask is formulated with the patent-pending MelaCEPTM Brightening Complex. Little Did You Know How Easy Mary Kay Is! PDF Print E-mail

Really? Mary Kay is this easy? Just wear nice clothes and act nice and you're going straight to the top? Does anyone really fall for this anymore?

By NSD Kathy Goff-Brummett

As strange as it may seem, booking, coaching, selling, and recruiting are the easy parts of this career. Granted, unsuccessful consultants are not doing enough of either. In fact, successful consultants do not do as much of either of these as they could. However, those are not the difficult parts of this career.

The difficult, challenging part of our wonderful opportunity is image, ethics, and attitude. Those are the areas that we most often resist with a passion. Why? Is it because we have such a need to do it our way? Is it because we resist any kind of authority, even the kind that has walked the walk and learned that the right way really is the best way?

The Mary Kay Way: Burn Those Bridges PDF Print E-mail
Burn those bridges, ladies!  It’s the right thing to do!  Trust me!

Oh my.  Did anyone else hear those words in Mary Kay?  Of course you did, especially if you became one of the TOP TWO PERCENT IN THE ENTIRE WORLD (that would be a director, of course), or at least in the company.  I wish I had a nickel for every time I heard “Mary Kay doesn’t like her directors to work.  It makes it look as though you don’t trust the company or the position of director.”

How many times did we hear directors say they were so excited to leave their J.O.B.S. so they could stop devoting all of that time working for someone else, and instead use that time to build their own futures?  How many other times were we told lies?  For example:

Everyone Can Hold 2 Mary Kay Classes a Week! PDF Print E-mail

I'm not sure how a Kaybot can presume to know the details of everyone's life and conclude that anyone and everyone can hold 2 Mary Kay classes a week... but that's not stopping them! Below is another one of those "if you can't do it you're a loser" type of rantings from a Mary Kay nsd.

In the Mary Kay world, "2 classes" is easy and anyone can do it. Those of us who have been in Mary Kay (or have had friends and relatives in MK) know that the hard part of that theory is actually finding women to book the classes, then hoping that they actually have them. That's a lot harder than it may sound to an outsider.

Clearly, the home party business model is outdated and no longer viable on a wide scale. Oh sure, you'll occasionally find a woman or two who is dying to get her friends together for some girl time and decides a Mary Kay party would be fun. But let's face it. That doesn't happen for most everyone in Mary Kay.

Directors, You Are the 2% That Keeps Dreams Alive PDF Print E-mail

Another one of those nauseating emails circulating amongst Mary Kay sales directors.  Are you convinced about how fabulous being a director is? Well it is! Even when you and 98% of the other directors aren't making a decent living! Don't forget - God wants you to sell Mary Kay and recruit more victims.

Dear Directors: this was on my heart this morning so I wanted to share.

Give yourself lots of credit! You are the top 2% of our entire company in Mary Kay out of thousands of women! Do you know how blessed you are that God chose to work through YOU to touch other women’s lives through Mary Kay? Not everyone makes it to Director- but you have! Not everyone is trusted by God to make a difference through offering the opportunity to women to change their lives- but you ARE!

Why You Shouldn't Read Pink Truth If You're in the Pink Fog PDF Print E-mail

From a Mary Kay sales director to other sales directors:

Hey Ladies,

I'm not sure if everyone realizes this, but every single time we go to a negative MK site "just to see" what is going on there we increase their hits which causes their sites to come up higher on search engines.

What does that mean to us. It's simple. Anyone who is thinking about becoming a consultant could have her dream taken from her if she decides to go online to do some research herself and happens to land on one of these sites. Now we all know that our success is this company is up to us and that we are bound by God & the company to do it the right way. We also know that there are those that haven't done it right and we need to pray for those they hurt and for them to.

Balancing the Books: A Commentary by Your Target PDF Print E-mail
I don’t normally do articles covering the selling aspects of Mary Kay, but from time to time, if I see selling guidance that makes me go, “Wowsers, that’s a pretty non-stalky idea!” I think it’s worth a mention to our active IBCs and directors.  Training in Mary Kay sees more pass-around than a kindergarten game of hot potato, so what’s one more source, right?

Today I’ll treat you to three examples of booking techniques I think need to get excommunicated, and three examples I felt were reasonable and even pleasant (meaning they won’t land you in the local police blotter under “Level Three Personal Space Offenders.”)  So without further ado, I present to you the Terrible Three:

Take a catalog or sale flyer to every birthday party.
But why should you take catalogs to birthday parties when you can delegate that hopefully-income-producing activity to your kids?  “Before [my daughter] Sidney goes to a slumber party, I say, "Here, take the (eye color) and the fragrance and spray it on everything. Then take orders.” (NSD Kathy Helou, “Mary Kay Seeks more Youthful Look,” Cincinnati Enquirer, 16 Sep 01.)  Isn’t it inspiring to know that Mary Kay’s leaders know how to draw the line between work and play and are passing that work ethic down to their children?

My favorite Mary Kay lies PDF Print E-mail

I thought it would be fun to tell you about some of my favorite lies told in Mary Kay. Lies? Lies, you say? But you thought Mary Kay was a “Christian” company!

Wrong! It’s a company that exploits Christianity for monetary gain. By spouting things about Christianity, they get women off their guard. Their defenses are lowered, and they’re more likely to believe the lies they’re told.

So here are a few of my favorites..

  • Just one bad apple in the bunch – Sorry, but if you look at Mary Kay recruiters in general, the vast majority of them tell lies to recruit. Many of the lies are lies of omission… They don’t tell the potential recruit how low their sales really are, the true quotas that are required to move up, and the fact that an estimated 99% of women actually lose money with Mary Kay.
  • Mary Kay products sell themselves – Anyone who has ever done Mary Kay knows what a total lie this is. Of course, there will occasionally be a customer who is hunting for a consultant. That’s rare. One in a while you’ll find an excited hostess who has a bunch of spendy friends at her party. That’s rare too. What we know is that the actual market for Mary Kay products is very small. There is a very tiny pool of women who are legitimate customers buying the products. There are certainly not enough of them to allow many women to turn a profit selling the products.

This Sounds Awfully Familiar, Charlie Brown! PDF Print E-mail
As far as I’m concerned, it’s not Halloween until I’ve watched It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! at least once.  Back in my tender grade school years, I can remember the giddiness I felt when the local TV station teased me with commercial after commercial, my heart leaping each time the screen faded to black – would they show the multicolored “SPECIAL PRESENTATION” screen that heralded the once-a-year, 23-minute Snoopy-worship session?  Or would it be yet another advertisement for Craftsman tools?  TVs that antagonize children like that get reincarnated as ugly abstract art on some aging hipster’s lawn – I think that’s in the Bible somewhere between Jude and the maps of Israel, but I could be wrong.

If you haven't yet seen this Peanuts classic this year, tip your hat to technology and give it a view on YouTube.  This time, however, try watching it with your Mary Kay experiences in mind.  Be you an IBC or director, active or former, I'm confident that you will see frighteningly accurate similarities between the Mary Kay world and this simple Halloween cartoon.

Pink Lie

Pink Lie - noun - In contrast with a white lie, which intends very little harm, a Pink Lie is self serving and intended to hide the truth not by overt manifestation but by omission. A  Pink Lie is true only to the extent that it gives partial information and depends on assumptions and omissions in order to blame shift any destructive results. (ie: nobody held a gun to your head)
