Deja Spew: Look, I’m telling you, Mary Kay is NOT an MLM! PDF Print E-mail
Is there anyone out there who hasn’t been told by a Mary Kay recruiter, “We are not an MLM, we are dual-level!”  It’s pretty much like being at Disney World in July and being told by the very air-conditioned monorail operator, “Don’t think of it as “hot and crowded,” think of it as one of the few times you can sinlessly trade sweaty snuggles with complete strangers!”  Now if only the strangers on either side of me resembled the Hugh Jackman twins and not bread dough with back hair.

When you’re done bleaching that last image out of your retinas, consider the following quotes and ask yourself, “How many of these morsels have I crossed paths with in my Mary Kay career?”

  • Some will, some won’t, so what – next!
  • A successful way to introduce someone to the opportunity…is to ask for their advice…simply tell them that you’ve just started your own business and you want to show them your product or opportunity and get their opinion.

Mary Kay: Still Not the Answer to the Economy PDF Print E-mail

The Dallas Morning News ran this lovely article focusing on Mary Kay , and just like all the other articles on this topic in the last few months, the writer apparently did no fact-checking.

The charade that multi-level marketing companies are the answer to the economy continues. Mary Kay is all to happy to get on that bandwagon if it will help recruiting efforts. Remember that 2008 numbers were down about 14% from the year before, so they're looking to make up some serious ground.

Mary Kay saw a high double-digit percentage increase in the number of beauty consultants this March compared with a year ago, Shasteen said.

Remember this article from a couple of months ago ? Mary Kay was boasting 30% more traffic to its website, but wouldn't share any real numbers, such as actual recruiting figures.

So now Mary Kay is talking and is probably close to getting back to the 40,000 recruits per month mark they were at in 2006. We know, of course, that this was achieved with the gimmick of the "rebate" on the starter kit if you bought $600 wholesale inventory when you signed up.

Seminar: The Biggest Fraud of Your Life PDF Print E-mail
Years of postings on Pink Truth from consultants and Directors have yet to produce an honest response from the company or the Nationals concerning the abuses suffered from starting a Mary Kay distributorship. I say distributorship because it certainly is not a "business".

Hundreds of women have posted here about their years of working it, multiple earned cars, status on the career path, and still they have come away with the realization that they can rarely be truthful about the internal workings of Mary Kay because women wouldn't join if they knew! Telling the TRUTH would definitely curtail all the enthusiasm!

Why you must go to Mary Kay's seminar in Dallas THIS YEAR. (And next year, and next year...) PDF Print E-mail
Every year, we hear Mary Kay sales directors chanting that THIS  YEAR is the year you must go to Mary Kay's annual seminar in Dallas. THIS is going to be your year. You don't want to miss THIS YEAR'S celebration.

Why the push to go THIS year? With a very high turnover rate, almost no one in your unit will be around NEXT YEAR. This is the sales director's one chance to get people sucked further into the big pink cult. If she doesn't get you to go this year, chances are she'll never get you to go.

And seminar is the ultimate love fest, meant to make you part with your money. Most women leave seminar excited, and that leads to more orders of Mary Kay products when they get home. The effect wears off quickly, often within weeks, as women come back to the reality of this business model which fails for almost everyone.

Lusting After Women in My Heart PDF Print E-mail

The other day I was listening to a Bible teacher expounding on a passage in the Sermon on the Mount, namely Matthew 5:27-28:  "You have heard it was said, you shall not commit adultery.  But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful desire for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart."

This teacher was asking why it was sinful to simply lust after a woman, even when there was no overt sexual act committed with her.  He then made the point that by imagining a sexual act with a woman, a man he was using her for his own gratification.  It was a selfish act which didn't take into account the feelings or will of the woman.  It was simply all about what the man could get out of her.

I thought, "Men - they can be such disgusting creatures, can't they?  I'm so glad I would never do that!"

Then I thought again.

Forgive and Move On! PDF Print E-mail

Another Mary Kay lover has some advice for me and the rest of the Pink Truth community. I like how she refers to us as "ridiclues"... I think maybe she should "get a clue." As usual, I am also amused at someone who quotes scripture while saying hateful things about and to us. I bet she makes her Lord and Savior proud.

I hope that you are able to read this email since you get so many of them. I will start out by saying this a good name is rather chosen than riches. I am speaking from the word of God. It is so funny and quite riduclues how many people who are just average, simple minded, and uneducated can make the statements that you have made on your website and have sucked others to believe just because you dind't make the cut has the room to down others, It is not your place to judge by using the deceptive tactic of defamation.

I truly believe that vengeance is mine saith the Lord, but I really wanted to comment on your evil manipulative ways. You talk about Mary Kay being a pyramid, you suck others, who for whatever reason didn't make it, becuase they were too lazy to work their business in Mary Kay and would rather join your website to bad mouth it.

Which I will comment on the fact that you sell items to denounce Mary Kay, only to uphold what your own personal beliefs, where do the proceeds of your money go? What charity do you give to, what lives are you changing in a positive manner, as a matter of fact is this the only thing you do because you have tricked other people to pay for advertisements and purchasing clothes on your website to pay your bills?

The Abuse of Loyalty, the Destructiveness of Denial, and the Lure of Hope PDF Print E-mail

A while back I got to wondering about all the women who are aware of Pink Truth, perhaps have read it from time to time, and still remain in Mary Kay, under some of the most damning I stories they could encounter.

The easy suggestion might be the “positive mental attitude” mantra that is so thick in Mary Kay circles. God knows you aren’t allowed to voice any business concerns or else ye shall be shunned. Mountains of objection-covering scripts exist to thwart that newbie who comes back to Miss Director with an accusation.  She hasn’t a chance.

So, for a while I thought it was ignorance of the truth that no one can share, and belief in the expertly crafted propaganda of the upline. It seems to me the more you think about the activities and functions of multi-levels such as Mary Kay (there is no such thing as dual marketing…duel marketing maybe…) you also see the snare of emotional traits, like loyalty and denial.

In the hands of an expert manipulator, your loyalty is richly rewarded with time and attention, leaving you unable to believe that these women have an ulterior motive. The “uplines” that have years of experience know exactly how money is made in Mary Kay, and they know exactly how many losses occur. They know which Directors are drowning in debt trying to save Units and Cars and make Unit Clubs, and they do not discourage them.

Husbands, Stand Up Against Mary Kay PDF Print E-mail

The Mary Kaybots will say you're unsupportive. They'll tell your wife that you're just "trying to hold her back," or that you "don't want her to have something just for herself." You'll be called negative. They'll say you just don't "get it."

The real truth is that you understand all too well what a losing proposition Mary Kay Cosmetics is. The failure rate in this so-called business is astonomically higher than any legitimate business. Why? Because it's more of a pyramid scheme (in which only a very small few win, dependent, of course, on all the rest to pass their money up the chain). It's not a real business in which results are reasonably correlated to your efforts.

So Mary Kay representatives must demonize those who use logic and reason to debunk this flopportunity. The Mary Kay director wants your wife to "invest" thousands of dollars in inventory, and you suggest she start with a very small order until she sees what she's selling. "Unsupportive! You need inventory to be successful! He must want you to fail!"

The husband recognizes that the family's money is going down the black hole called Mary Kay for repetitive "training" events which are nothing more than recruiting events. Between supplies, gas, postage, and a myriad of other expenses, the husband sees that after months, this "business" isn't even close to showing a profit. What happened to that "50% profit" they all bragged about? The ability to start earning money right away? The husband sees Mary Kay for what it is and questions the bottom line. "He doesn't get it! It takes time for a business to make money! You have to work the numbers! He must not want you to succeed!"

Mary Kay and Keyword Advertising PDF Print E-mail

I raised this issue when Mary Kay Cosmetics first filed a lawsuit against Touch of Pink Cosmetics and its owners, Amy and Scott Weber.  The company has objected because TOP purchased Google keyword advertising which included searches for "mary kay" on Google.

This is actually a common practice. If you're selling a certain brand name of products, it's normal to actually use that brand name to identify those products.  How else would people know what you're selling if you can't call Mary Kay products by their name?

Of course, Mary Kay turned that identification of products by TOP into something nefarious. They presented it as somehow infringing on their trademarks. In Mary Kay's motion for judgment against TOP:

Pink Lie

A  Pink Lie is true only to the extent that it gives partial information and depends on assumptions and omissions in order to blame shift any destructive results. (ie: nobody held a gun to your head)
