Pushing a Weak DIQ

This message was posted in a “Mary Kay sales director only” group on Facebook:

Anybody have an email you send to a new DIQ’s team members? I have a new DIQ with a very weak team and I really want to encourage them to rally behind her! Thanks!

And the first thing I thought about was the ethical dilemma that this director should feel. Sending a letter to team members doesn’t make them strong. Chances are, these team members will always be weak.

I don’t pretend to know whether or not the unit member was pushed into DIQ  (Director in Qualification) simply because she had enough warm bodies to do it. But if she was, how ethical is that?

What if the unit member wanted to go for DIQ without regard to what the director thought? Does the director have an obligation to try to talk her out of it if the director knows she is going to fail because of the weak team?

The director has to know that this woman is going to fail, in all likelihood. Women don’t go into DIQ with weak teams and come out with strong units. They don’t go into directorship with a weak unit and turn it into a strong unit.

What responsibility do Mary Kay directors have to advise their unit members on this issue? Were any of our former directors ever in this situation? What did you do?

    The dilemma is being honest with them having weakness on their teams and sounding negative and discouraging. One of my offspring refused to heed my warnings about not relying on minimum orders and just getting people Active, and she didn’t last long. It’s usually not sustainable to order enough product to make production every months, but I also know a Director who has missed production every other month for well over 10 years and still doesn’t have a car. Yet, she’s done Court of Sales many times.

    The expectancy to “build people” is that you aren’t to calm any enthusiasm they have over a goal. Kind of hard to follow the Golden Rule doing so, isn’t it?

    This is one more symptom in the MLM disease. Honesty and good business practices don’t apply because the entire system is built on scamming people out of money. Information is the cure and eventually, the facts available online will wipe out Mary Kay.

    The DIQ situation is a catch 22 because being honest with women who won’t succeed would cause her up lines to lose.

      And she can’t even write her own! This lady wants to use someone else’s prewritten drivel to send out.

      Can’t even be bothered to spend ten minutes to write up her own email.

        “There. Now I can just sit back and wait for someone to solve my problem for me. Well done, Me. Well done.”

    I watched an MK acquaintance try and fail, try and fail, and try a fail numerous times in DIQ. Her team was never strong, and there was no way she going to be able to finish all of this on her own. It’s the vicious cycle of MK and MLMs and how everything is built on sand.

    “I really want to encourage them to rally around her”… Ummm, What?!
    Maybe I’m reading it wrong, but Look how dysfunctional that sounds in any sort of work environment other than MLM! Even worse is that the consultants are supposedly independent business owners. It’s not their job to “rally around” the director or help the director earn a free car or get a higher commission (or prevent the director from losing the unit). So many of the “Unit goals” in Mary Kay benefitted one person only: the director.

    If someone at work said we need to “rally around” our boss/ manager, I’d be completely taken aback unless said boss had a serious illness, death in the family, or other life-altering circumstance. I do my job because it’s important to me to be good at my job & so I can feed my family, not to help my boss feel better about herself or help her earn bigger commissions.
