30 Years of Failure in Mary Kay

Even those in the upper ranks of Mary Kay can’t see what complete failures they are in this “business model” (not really a business!) that sets you up to fail. Last year, Cindy Machado, a long-time Mary Kay sales director who never makes it to nsd was ruminating on 10 years of failure. She stayed on the MK hamster wheel for 10 years with nothing to show for it. And she thinks this is a badge of honor.

But the story gets better. Cindy wants you to think that she has achieved success in Mary Kay.

But the truth is that she has been spinning her wheels in Mary Kay for 30 years. THIRTY YEARS.

Can you imagine wasting 30 years of your life with a scam like Mary Kay, and then blaming yourself for the whole world to see? Cindy just didn’t work hard enough. She didn’t believe enough. She didn’t have the right goal. That’s why she’s not to nsd, even when youngsters like Jamie Taylor scam their way to the title.

Uggh. Cindy, it is not “disobedience” that is stopping you from becoming an nsd in Mary Kay. Almost no one gets there. And that is because it is a broken system that guarantees almost everyone fails and loses money. You don’t get to nsd with legitimate hard work and effort and a repeatable system. If that was true, there’d be thousands of nsds, not a couple hundred.

  1. Sometimes, it take more moxie to admit defeat and to quit. Refusing to quit, no matter the circumstances, can be toxic.

Example: I’m going to fly off this bridge and I won’t stop until I accomplish it. Yes, I have hundreds of broken bones, lost all my friends and family (who think I’m nuts) and I’ve given up all hope of any real life, but I’m gonna keep going. I’m no quitter.

It’s OK to reevaluate a goal after you get more information. Get a newer, healthier goal. SMART goals have to be Achievable (A). There is strong evidence that Mary Kay success is almost impossible.

  2. It’s so sad. Hers has been the perfect attitude for getting sucked dry while running endlessly on the hamster wheel. She set goals for herself and missed them. Why? Was it because there were way too many others setting the same goals, and it was mathematically impossible for more than a tiny fraction to achieve them? No! It was because she didn’t work hard enough!

Come on, Cindy, wake up to reality. It’s not you; it’s the system. Failure for the vast majority is built into it. You’re not fighting your own shortcomings; you’re fighting math. And math always wins.

  3. So what is in it for these ladies? It is all so fake…how can there be any satisfaction?

    • In Cindy’s own words: “Because [Mary Kay] had been the one, positive stable force in my life.” Having drunk the Kool-aid, she thinks Mary Kay is what’s holding her up instead of what’s keeping her down.

  4. She sees Mary Kay as “the one stable, positive force” all those years. Looks to me more like the common denominator behind all the negative events.

  5. “Disobedience”, can’t you just feel the cult mentality? Any adult using that word, especially to describe themself, needs to seriously reevaluate who they’re listening to and associating with. (Unless you’re into that kind of thing if you know what I mean.)

  6. Do we know if she shows up in Applause as a director earning at least minimum wage? Any ideas on where she sits income wise in the thousands of directors?

  7. And she sadly is led by her recruiter/NSD that makes the bar extremely high just to stay under her wing. That pressure alone makes my chest tighten even just thinking about it.
