You Just Had a Bad Experience

An email from a Mary Kay lady who knows all the catch phrases….

I know I shouldn’t bother, because you probably get tons of emails like the one I am writing but what can I say…it’s my personality to defend something very important to me. My main problem with your sight is that you are basing your entire experience in Mary Kay on the directors or Nationals you worked under. I see very little about the actual company and more about how you were trained. Although bad directors do reflect on the company you should be more open to the fact that you just had a bad experience.

I too was a consultant under a “bad” director that only pushed recruits and inventory and I quickly burned out and left (five years ago) but I was logical and I knew that one person making bad judgement calls didn’t make the entire company bad.

If Mary Kay is as corrupt as you would say then how come more women make $100,000 a year in Mary Kay then any other company in the United State of America? How come there are thousands of women waiting to share their testimonies of how Mary Kay changed their future and their families futures? The reason you see so many women quitting is because they want a hobby and not a business.

You can’t make money in sales if you don’t treat it like a business and most women don’t have that discipline, it’s not because the company messed up. They have made it so extremely easy with $100 kit, 90% buy back, 100% guarantee on products. What other business can you start in America with $100? Even with inventory you can’t start your own business for less than $5,000. I now am in a unit with an amazing Christian Director that is truly helping to change the lives of hundreds. The experience is completely different and I am continuing to meet amazing directors that are nothing like the women you tear down and degrade on your site.

Inventory is such a controversial topic in Mary Kay. If I was to open my own beauty store would I have an empty store with catalogues on the shelf? Of course not, so why do others find it so weird that inventory is encouraged for any woman wanting to run a business. Some directors are way to aggressive with it, but the top directors know that yes Inventory makes a Mary Kay consultants job easier and will help sales but not absolutely necessary. My director doesn’t even talk big inventory packages unless directly asked about it.

I think you have let bitterness for a few people and your own personal experience poison you and now you are trying to persuade people away from what could be an opportunity of a life time for them. Is Mary Kay easy? No! It’s a business…you work hard and you run A BUSINESS! I pray that you will read my ramblings (smile) and open your heart to the idea of letting go of your anger. Find something that makes you happy and isn’t based on bashing good people.

Thank you for listening.

God bless,

Stephanie

P.S. How long since you have read Mary Kay’s autobiography? Read the section about tithing to her church and tell me that isn’t a truly amazing woman.

  1. “…more women make $100,000 a year in Mary Kay then any other company in the United State of America…”
Do MK IBC’s really just hear this and automatically take it as fact? First, it’s not even close to truth. And not for nothing, $100,000 is not a bad income; however *these* days it is not even close to actual executive income unless you are saying that is monthly, as Kaybots are clearly not.

    y’all need some new shtick

      • There’s a thread for that on the discussion board! I hope one day someone at the FTC will not only view that thread, but actually do something about it. These claims are NOT from a few random, “rogue” directors; they’re from just about EVERY director.

  2. “I know I shouldn’t bother, because you probably get tons of emails like the one I am writing but what can I say…it’s my personality to defend something very important to me.”

No you shouldn’t have bothered but still we enjoy reading these emails and pointing out where you are wrong. Guess we have that in common.

“My main problem with your sight(sic) is that you are basing your entire experience in Mary Kay on the directors or Nationals you worked under. I see very little about the actual company and more about how you were trained. Although bad directors do reflect on the company you should be more open to the fact that you just had a bad experience.”

And the victim blaming blaming starts early.

“I too was a consultant under a “bad” director that only pushed recruits and inventory and I quickly burned out and left (five years ago) but I was logical and I knew that one person making bad judgement calls didn’t make the entire company bad.”

No, one person doesn’t make the company bad, but we see here time and again it’s not one person, it’s a great many women who make the same “bad judgement calls”. The reasons the company is bad are far more complex than just bad judgement calls.

“If Mary Kay is as corrupt as you would say then how come more women make $100,000 a year in Mary Kay then any other company in the United State of America?”

Cite, please. That is short for citation, not sight or site. This is an oft repeated lie not only by MK but nearly all MLM companies. A lie doesn’t become the truth because (general) you spout it often enough.

” How come there are thousands of women waiting to share their testimonies of how Mary Kay changed their future and their families futures?”

We get testimonies from women and men as to how MK changed their future for the worst.

“The reason you see so many women quitting is because they want a hobby and not a business.”

Or they saw how they were being financially abused and left dis-illusioned because they were promised the stars but ended up with nothing to show for their efforts.

“You can’t make money in sales if you don’t treat it like a business and most women don’t have that discipline, it’s not because the company messed up.”

Wow, way to piss on your own sex. I can see you are “not like other girls”! Women do have the discipline it’s just the system is rigged worse than a casino.

” They have made it so extremely easy with $100 kit, 90% buy back, 100% guarantee on products.”

Pointing out something that they have to do isn’t the flex you think it is.

“What other business can you start in America with $100? Even with inventory you can’t start your own business for less than $5,000.”

Which is why your helpful director is pushing you to make that big, big first purchase.

” I now am in a unit with an amazing Christian Director that is truly helping to change the lives of hundreds. The experience is completely different and I am continuing to meet amazing directors that are nothing like the women you tear down and degrade on your site.”

We have seen several times this week being a professed Christian makes you a good or moral person. Pointing out how some of these women fall short of the supposed standards of Mk isn’t tearing down or degrading. Especially as they show repeatedly on their social media how far short they fall.
And your hypocrisy bearing in mind what you said earlier in the paragraph is outstanding.

“Inventory is such a controversial topic in Mary Kay. If I was to open my own beauty store would I have an empty store with catalogues on the shelf? Of course not, so why do others find it so weird that inventory is encouraged for any woman wanting to run a business.”

If I was going to open a beauty store, I’d check that there wasn’t much in the way of competition. I’d ask what people wanted and no I wouldn’t have empty shelves . But I wouldn’t be buying constantly things I couldn’t sell.

” Some directors are way to aggressive with it, but the top directors know that yes Inventory makes a Mary Kay consultants job easier and will help sales but not absolutely necessary. My director doesn’t even talk big inventory packages unless directly asked about it.”

    Sure, Jan.

“I think you have let bitterness for a few people and your own personal experience poison you and now you are trying to persuade people away from what could be an opportunity of a life time for them.”

Again with the bitterness., emotional manipulation. Women are allowed to have and express negative emotions.

” Is Mary Kay easy? No! It’s a business…you work hard and you run A BUSINESS! I pray that you will read my ramblings (smile) and open your heart to the idea of letting go of your anger.”

The dichotomy of MLMs is that it is both easy to run a business but it’s also hard. You get full-time pay for part-time work yet you have to work far more and earn far less. I’m smiling at your pathetic ramblings too. And yet another attempt at shame valid feelings.

” Find something that makes you happy and isn’t based on bashing good people.”

This place makes me happy. From what I’ve seen on their social media a lot of directors and NSDs are not good people. They are liars, thieves and grifters.

    “Thank you for listening.

    God bless,

    Stephanie

P.S. How long since you have read Mary Kay’s autobiography? Read the section about tithing to her church and tell me that isn’t a truly amazing woman.”

The P.S. makes it sound like salvation is just another financial transaction. Not something spiritual.

  3. Stephanie,

Your arguments are all based on the assumption that these platitudes are truth. If you were a business owner, many MK women did earn $100k, and inventory pushing was rare, maybe you might have a leg to stand on. Come back when you learn what 99% of participants do: you will make no profit or likely lose money.

When you do have that lightbulb moment, don’t feel ashamed. Speak out. The MLM system depends on making participants feel ashamed and embarrassed because they think they were failures in the midst of all these “successful” women (i.e. liars).

  4. Dearest Stephanie,

I know a LOT of women who make more than $100,000 per year, and guess what? None of them are in an MLM like MK. Not. One. These women are in a wide variety of professions — engineering, nursing, HR, management, and even the US military. Heck, I’m a registered nurse and make over $100K per year courtesy of working travel contracts. Do I not work hard or have the discipline to do my job? Did I have to pay $100 and then some to start this particular job? (I’m not talking about getting my degree… I’m referring to employment.) Do I lose money every single month because I’m working my job?

Your arguments are invalid, and the lines corporate continues to feed you and everyone else in the pink cult are just that: lines. There is no data to support it.

    • I have a neighbor who is pretty high up in Scentsy and she had to get a 9-5 job to provide insurance for her family. I own a sandwich franchise and my husband owned an electrical contracting business. We had to provide our own insurance. It’s not cheap but we could definitely afford it with our successful businesses. Makes me wonder why Scentsy lady did have enough money coming in to cover her own insurance expense.

      • Around 30 months ago, a Scentsy rep from Ontario posted on the Montreal BST page 3 or 4 posts every day. When I checked Google Maps for the area there was 9 self-designated Scentsy consultants in a population of 4,500 people.

6 months later there is one. The person who runs that town’s BST page. The BST page is full of her Scentsy ads with no inter-actions.

  5. “The reason you see so many women quitting is because they want a hobby and not a business.”

If all they wanted was a hobby, why did they quit? Logic fail.

Stephanie, you should put more thought into what you’re saying. All you’re doing is parroting lines you’ve heard from others, including the laughable notion that more women earn $100k per year in Mary Kay than anywhere else. There are major tech companies (e.g., Apple, Facebook, Google) who have more women earning $100k or more in one building than in all of Mary Kay.

    • NMKW, this is a really, REALLY good point:

“The reason you see so many women quitting is because they want a hobby and not a business.”

“If all they wanted was a hobby, why did they quit? Logic fail.”

It’s so simple yet so relevant! If you sign up for MK as a hobby, then you surely don’t intend to make money and don’t care if you do. Hobbies cost money.

So, WHEN you sign up, you should treat it like a business and buy inventory, but AFTER you do that, and fail to make any profit, you should then refer to your MK effort as a hobby.

  6. Mary Kay Ash copied her business origin story from the founder of Nutrilite. Does that sound like something a “truly amazing woman” would do? Tithing to a church does not make someone a saint.

    15
  7. So glad she felt the need to mention that her new upline is “Christian”. And we should read MK’s chapter on “tithing”. Gag. Also loads of people (even women!) make over $100,000 a year!

  8. *sigh*

Just like pretty much every single “Friday Critic”, this is an IBC with no experience as a director.

What we never see is a critique from an actual director who is supposedly making this six figure income. None.

To this (and every other) IBC critic: when you’re upset about what we publish here, go to your director or senior director and tell them why you’re upset and invite THEM to address us directly and show us how they indeed are making such a great living.

Why should YOU, the consultant, have to defend the income that your director makes? Why doesn’t your director come here and defend it herself? If she won’t, maybe you should ask yourself why. Could it be that we are right and she is NOT making what she claims?

  9. Yeah ummm, some of the most amazing women I know don’t go to church… Tithing and the % given doesn’t make a person good or bad…

  10. I had an amazing director and national. I worked extremely hard to become a director and qualify for a car. I made commissions over $3000 twice in my year as a director but I went into debt and lost my unit in a month due to falsehoods. I couldn’t continue to tell potential recruits that they could easily get all of their products for half off. Yes, I had a few big checks but I spent way too much on business expenses and inventory that I still can’t get rid of. I didn’t turn it in because the charge backs would have negated and profit. I get mad still thinking about it all. Due to covid, I never even got my car.

    • Thank you for sharing. And please know you are not alone; what you experienced has been experienced by thousands of MK directors.

  11. “How long since you have read Mary Kay’s autobiography?” Which part? The part where she lies about her “invalid father” (who was working as a salesman), being a latchkey child (with relatives one house away), her poverty (they lived in a good neighborhood, owned their own home, had a telephone, her mom gave her money for the movies), etc.

The part where she forgets to mention that she was not a hard-working single mum, she was really married for most of her life, living next to the country club for some of it, married to her boss the district manager?

  12. “ How long since you have read Mary Kay’s autobiography? Read the section about tithing to her church and tell me that isn’t a truly amazing woman.”

Dennis Rader was elected president of the Christ Lutheran Church council in Wichita and was also a Cub Scout leader. Read his Wikipedia page and tell me that he isn’t a truly amazing man.

  13. “If Mary Kay is as corrupt as you would say then how come more women make $100,000 a year in Mary Kay then any other company in the United State of America?”

Could you please provide a source for this claim? Not just a quote from a director who heard it from another director, but an actual authoritative source that tracks these things?

”I now am in a unit with an amazing Christian Director that is truly helping to change the lives of hundreds.”

Now that you have a better director, how much profit have you made, after inventory and other expenses are accounted for? Assuming you’re making a profit, have you tracked your hours to figure out if you’re at least making minimum wage? Your new director may have an amazing personality, but as you said, this is not a hobby. She’s not a great director unless she’s she’s helping you clear a reasonable hourly wage after you’ve paid all your MK related expenses.

  14. “I now am in a unit with an amazing Christian Director that is truly helping to change the lives of hundreds. The experience is completely different and I am continuing to meet amazing directors…..”—

Just exactly what is she implying here?

Imagine if I were to replace her descriptive word with “White”, it sounds like this: I now am in a unit with an amazing White Director that is truly helping to change the lives of hundreds. The experience is completely different and I am continuing to meet amazing directors….

Stephanie is an ignorant MK concultant and a Christian Supremacist. Like peas and carrots!
