An email I received from a very “successful” woman who has been in Mary Kay a whole month!

I started selling Mary Kay a little over a month ago, and I happened to run across your site this morning. I find your site to be extremely one-sided. Of course, not everyone is cut out to run a business, not everyone is cut out to be a Mary Kay consultant, or you would find everyone selling it, if it was sooo easy.

I am not sure what kind of Sales Directors those people on your site have but they were obviously not of any caliber. I was never lied to or told that I NEEDED to buy inventory. I still haven’t bought any inventory yet and have already made over $2,000 for my family from Mary Kay. And I do not have any other source of income. I have three children under the age of four and I don’t have much time to put into my business but I am doing well.

I thinkk your website unfairly takes the positions of those who could not fit into the Mary Kay program and makes it seem like a scam or an illegitimate business. That is a ridiculous thing as I happen to be finding success with this business. But like I said, to each his own, but if you want your cause to be taken seriously, consider talking in facts, and not taking the words of a few bitter people and claiming it as the Mary Kay Way.

  2. It will be interesting to see how your perspective changes once you’re no longer selling to cousins, and high school classmates on Facebook. And I’m willing to bet someone will convince you that it is in “your* best interest to have at least $1800 inventory on shelf.

Oh my, A one month newbie who has not *yet* purchased inventory. You may not know this, but your director has a huge asterisk next to your name. Wait for it.

When the bloom wears off, we will still be here.

Considering Mary Kay consultant’s misuse of so many other business terms, I’d like to know her definition of “made”.

This is where the ol’ IRS Sched C comes in handy.

  3. This site is chock full of facts and figures, and they prove mathematically that Mary Kay is a scam. It’s not a scam because everyone loses money in it; it’s a scam because virtually everyone loses money in it. The tiny minority who do well do not nullify the vast horde who get taken advantage of.

This writer will learn the truth soon enough. Those pity buys will dry up and they’ll find out they have to place minumum orders to qualify for commissions, even though there aren’t any sales anymore. The losses will stack up like the unsold inventory piled on the kitchen table. Then what?

Come back when the bloom is off the rose, gentle critic. This site has information on how to return your unsold inventory before the clock runs out. You’ll find plenty of moral support also. Believe it or not, everyone here is on your side, you just don’t see it yet.

    • She is already deep in the Pink Fog. It, obviously, did not take too long. I give her a couple of months before it all comes crashing down.

  4. I started selling Mary Kay a little over a month ago, and I happened to run across your site this morning. I find your site to be extremely one-sided.

I find all blogs by MK huns to be extremely one-sided as well. Funny how that works.

Of course, not everyone is cut out to run a business, not everyone is cut out to be a Mary Kay consultant, or you would find everyone selling it, if it was sooo easy.

Then , why dear lady, am I constantly being told, that running your MK/MLM business is easy, products fly off the shelf, full time pay for part time work ???
Also if every-one was selling MK, who’d be paying it?

I am not sure what kind of Sales Directors those people on your site have but they were obviously not of any caliber.

Many of the directors are tagged, just go search their names and read their social medias. Make your own judgment on their caliber.

I was never lied to or told that I NEEDED to buy inventory. I still haven’t bought any inventory yet and have already made over $2,000 for my family from Mary Kay.

I’m almost certain you’ve been lied to, if only by omission. You may nor have been told that you are buying inventory but you probably have bought some kind of starter package. But how much of that $2000 was profit? Real profit, I mean..after what you paid for, gas or other delivery costs all those trivial start-up costs? And that’s your warm market, now you have to sell to other people who may not be interested in making pity purchases.

And I do not have any other source of income. I have three children under the age of four and I don’t have much time to put into my business but I am doing well.

No other source of income?? Then how did you fund your entry into capitalism, Bank of Hubby, LLC? Praying for pennies? An accommodating fairy godmother?

I thinkk (sic) your website unfairly takes the positions of those who could not fit into the Mary Kay program and makes it seem like a scam or an illegitimate business.

Well, it is a scam and borderline illegitimate business model. People don’t fit into the program because the program is designed to fail the overwhelming majority of people it claims to aide.

That is a ridiculous thing as I happen to be finding success with this business. But like I said, to each his own, but if you want your cause to be taken seriously, consider talking in facts, and not taking the words of a few bitter people and claiming it as the Mary Kay Way.

You claim to be finding success in a single month of operation. My daughter earned over $600 in commissions for a six hour shift on Black Friday. On Boxing Day, she earned another $500, both on top of her normal pay. And people were coming to her, not her chasing them down.
As for facts, just check if one of your up-line has a tag. Or one of the other directors who is admired by your up-line. See a

1)million dollar director set up a gofundme for a vanity musical venture

    2) two directors set up a venmo for one’s post wedding ceremony/pre wedding sideshow bachelorette party for hundred dollar cocktails

    3) one of the above directors bragging about stealing from Starbucks

All of these and more are on these directors social media, easily found and verified. They may seem like they are living the high life but they still want/need their down-line to support them outside of their earnings.

PS. women are allowed negative emotions. Calling people bitter is a form of victim shaming. Please don’t tell people how to feel.

  5. Like CarolAnne said, we ALL made good money in the first month from pity purchases. Heck, I’d have a different story to tell if everything continued like the first month! But after I’d gotten my friends and family to buy, that was it.

  6. Aw, bless your little heart!! A month in and you’ve MADE money?? *clutches pearls*

Come back in another 2-3 months and tell us that we are wrong… wrong about all of it. Wrong about the facts, the gaslighting, the deception.

  7. This site is one sided huh. Well I find Mary Kay to be one sided. All sunshine and rainbows and skipping through fields of daisies with a pink unicorn, is it? No flaws at all, are there? If it doesn’t work out it’s because something is wrong with YOU, right? Huh. Sounds one sided to me.

  8. Hi hun! I was once like you. I had a successful debut where many friends and family ordered, and then my cousin booked a party that yielded a lot more sales. Between those two parties, I sold almost $2300 retail. Wow! That’s $1150 profit, right? Right? No, actually it’s not. Between the cost of the website, the cost to set up ProPay, credit card fees, free shipping for orders over $50, section 2, hostess gifts, hostess discounts, other discounts as ordering incentives, party prizes, mailing those party prizes, and no profit on the products I kept for myself, I made about $30.

What’s that you say? That’s OK, because now that my start up costs are paid I can go out and book more parties and make more money? That’s a great idea! I booked two parties off my cousin’s party. Guess how much money I made off those two parties? Zero! Because neither of them held. There are many, many former consultants on this site who will tell you that my experience is not at all unusual.

So what’s next for a brand new consultant like you? Let’s see, you can pester your friends and family until one of them agrees to book a party. You can warm chatter women in coffee shops and retail stores. That’s not at all intrusive and creepy. You could enroll anyone who ever purchased anything from you in the Preferred Customer Program. That’s only like $0.70/person and a few of them might order a lipstick or something. But uh oh, by this time you’re inactive, so you need to order more products to meet the $225 minimum to become active again.

Or you could realize that you’re spending a lot of time and making next to nothing, so you’re better off running a cash register at the supermarket for extra cash. You’ll spend less time working, make more money, and people won’t ignore you or avoid you when you talk about work.

  9. If she “made” over $2000 in a month then she had to have sold in the range of $4000 – $5000 including the 60/40 split and giveaways. I don’t want to say she’s lying, but…

Let’s say she did sell that much. If she didn’t order inventory, how is she getting product to her friends and family? I imagine her SD is happy since she clearly ordered more than $600.

  10. LOL she has been in Mary Kay for one whole month!!!

Her credit card is still crisp and replete with a seemingly infinite limit (yeah, I know that’s an oxymoron but heck, I’m proudly sticking with it)!

She needs to have her director, or her director’s director, come here and prove their earnings.

So many of you PT faithful have been directors, so can you tell us: were you PROFITING $2,000 a month? Did you do it your first month in MK? Did you do it consistently as a CONSUKTANT (oh lol, that was a typo but I’m going to leave it as it is)?

Did you have a year in MK where you profited $2,000 every month for the year? Maybe the better question is, in the days before you were a director when you were a consultant, did you EVER have a month of $2,000 profit? If not you personally, how many of your recruits earned 2,000 pure profit in their first (or any) month?

    • Nope! First month I put in a$600 order to get the cheap jewelry. Only half was sold to others. I made nothing, but dang it, I was hooked and a director earning a car within the year. Totally broke! Even having a commission check over $3000 didn’t help. Director expenses were ridiculous. I’m very smart and motivated and while I could have kept being dishonest to others, I refused. BTW, preferred customers catalogs are .90 now.

  11. She is lying, With no inventory she would have had to place so many small orders, shipping costs add up. Plus I am sure she had to give steep discounts to her warm market so they would buy.

Even seasoned consultants with years dont sell this much in a month.

    She is lying

  12. You haven’t “made” $2000 yet because you haven’t subtracted expenses. How much of that retail is going to be decreased by ordering the product you sold? And then Section 2 because you at least need to deliver it all in bags. Oh, but then you need to add those customers to PCP. Don’t forget your unit meeting costs. Oh, and the cost of buying the outfit you’ll wear to your meetings and parties. Let’s not forget gas, which has NOT been updated by the IRS as mileage for the inflation prices of it happening right now.

Lady, you haven’t profited $2,000 in your first month, and your naive mindset gives you away. Good luck keeping your money when paying for Seminar!

  13. Uh, how did she make over $ 2000 without buying any inventory? I’m impressed. No doubt she’s on the road to riches. That Cadillac will be at your door any day sweetheart!
