On a recent thread in a Mary Kay sales director Facebook group, women were complaining about MK Inc. cracking down on income claims. Basically, consultants and directors aren’t allowed to make income claims of any sort, because it’s such dangerous territory. One of the sales directors, Tori Sides, saw fit to complain about Pink Truth without actually naming us.

How do I know she was referring to Pink Truth?

We have a long history with her mother, Karla Reno, a woman who has been a Mary Kay sales director for nearly 30 years, but still can’t seem to move up in the business.

Back in 2006 when Pink Truth started (first as Mary Kay Sucks, then settling on our current site name), Karla posted hateful comments and told me how terrible I was for having this site. Karla Sides Reno couldn’t help herself in 2012 when a negative article about Mary Kay came out in Harper’s magazine, and she sent me this message:

Tracy– you’re stil a loser asshole and I’m still making money in Mk after 20 years! Yay!

This loser makes far more money than Karla could ever hope to make, and it’s all done via an ethical business. No need to lie to any of my clients, no need to con anyone into doing business with me, and I’m actually helping people with my services.

Poor Karla and her daughters. Two of her daughters were sales directors under her, but Taylor Sides lost her directorship and is just a consultant now. Karla is still flailing around after almost 28 years and no closer to being an nsd.

How sad that after 16 years, Karla and her daughter just can’t stop focusing on Pink Truth. Sorry losers, we’re over here telling the truth about your scam, and we’re not going to stop any time soon.

  1. Tori says we are being silenced

No, you’re not. You are being reminded to abide by the terms and conditions of the contract you signed on to willingly. If you find (general) you unwilling or unable to comply with the most basic of requests, then being an “business owner” isn’t how you should be earning your living.

        • Lol I’m picturing you making that speech on a stage in Dallas in the stifling heat of summer while wearing some ridiculous GMB-inspired disaster of a dress to a roomful (well, not so full of a room these more recent years amirite) of women from all over who went into even more debt just to go to Dallas and sleep four to a room to pretend to care about your accomplishments and upload pics of mashed-potato-filled wine glasses.

“holds the Downvote aloft” man I wish I had the skills to create a Downvote Trophy image for us to use when appropriate.

  2. Hmm. Where is the curiosity? More specifically, why can’t they make income claims? She seems more concerned that MK legal is not going after Pink Truth. The next logical question is why not?

The answer to the former is that income claims put Mary Kay at risk of FTC intervention, because such claims in MLM are well known to be misleading (aka dishonest). The most logical answer for the latter is that Pink Truth is telling the truth, and there is nothing Mary Kay can do to stop it.

  3. Does it ever occur to them that their legal department doesn’t do anything because they can’t. Facts and personal experiences are not defamation.

    • This! There is no slander or defamation here per the legal definitions. Top that off with MK legal cannot disprove any of the so-called lies here since they are truths.

Put THAT in your pipe and smoke it, Tori.

  4. We all know how reticent MK Legal is to sue anyone. That is: not the least bit. If they saw anything actionable on Pink Truth, they’d jump all over it.

MK Legal is jittery about income claims because the FTC has served notice they’ll indulge none of it. The FTC sent warning letters to hundreds of MLM companies in the early days of COVID for a reason: “Make money from home!” is illegal false advertising when 99% lose money. Casinos pay better, and they can’t make income claims either.

Tori, if Pink Truth is telling lies, please point out a single one. And if you want to talk about your Mary Kay “success,” just be sure to balance it with the names of every person you recruited who then lost money and dropped out. It may take awhile to compile such a long list, but I’m sure it will make the FTC happy. I can’t say the same for MK Legal, though.

    • That actually looks like a MK piece, although it doesn’t have its typical markings in the footer that would identify it as such.

  5. Interesting that Karla Sides Reno suggests that Mary Kay use smaller venues and consolidate event so they can have in-person events. They have been doing that, and attendance keeps shrinking.

Much more consolidating and they’ll be meeting in the back room of the local waffle house.

    • Sorry about the duplicate post. On my phone, it said “awaiting moderation” for over 24 hours, so I tried again. Got the same response. I’m not sure what happened, other than maybe one of the words triggering a spam filter.

  7. If she really owned her own business couldn’t she work with a legal team to take down slander (if there actually was defamation going on)? Or coordinate events differently if she wasn’t satisfied with how they were being run? Or make any kind of actual business decision?

Oh wait, they don’t own anything. Lol

  8. Just because you disagree with something doesn’t mean it’s not true. The First Amendment really makes them angry, doesn’t it? I’m so sick of the overuse of the word “misinformation”.

Glad to be out and not dealing with Open House and Leadership expenses? Airfare is up over 40%. That’s gonna leave a mark!
