Dawn Wangard recently reached out to the Mary Kay director group on Facebook for help. How do you help a customer who admits her love of trending products?

For years, Mary Kay sales directors have promoted the idea that Mary Kay is so “on trend.” But when you look at the products objectively, you see that over and over, MK is behind in releasing the newest things.

Karen Saphos suggests inviting the customer over to try the products. She can give her opinion to be shared with Mary Kay. Nancy Polish reminds us that Mary Kay is the #1 Skin Care and Color Brand in the world! (Best selling among direct sellers). While Kay  Georgina thinks the customer should be wowed with facts so she will have FOMO and Heidi Crawford recommends the customer be introduced to Mary Kay’s new campaign Miss Conceptions.

Casey Evans offered three potential scripts from ChatGPT.

Gail Scott shows up to offer some hard truths. Mary Kay cannot compete with current brands. If you try to compare a Mary Kay product to a competitors, you will sound inauthentic if you haven’t tried their product too.

Amanda Sue Trimble tries to offer some suggestions on comparable products. Mary Kay is more known for skin care than color, but she’s sure the company has a lot of great things coming. Gail replies that Mary Kay competitors have quality products with a following. No one is coming to Mary Kay to find the must have products. They simply don’t have any. People are no longer loyal to the brand. They will find the product that works best for their specific need. Mary Kay just cannot compete.

These comments are all from Mary Kay directors whose income is dependent on new consultants signing up under them and ordering new inventory packages. Seeing that Gail has such disdain for the current product lineup, I wonder what her pitch sounds like to any potential recruit?

    • Gail is also a jerk. She was a major troll in the early days of PT, telling us what losers were were compared to her. Interesting that she’s still a loser sales director working multiple jobs.

  1. None of this is an issue if you don’t plan to sell the product outside the downline. All you have to do is get 10 women to buy $600 of product, then convince each of them to recruit another 10 women (each) to do the same etc., ad infinitum.

Just 5 levels of this and you will have $60M in sales, without a single outside purchase! In “Merchants of Deception”, recruits are told that if they just “follow the system”, they won’t have to sell a single item but can get rich beyond their wildest dreams!

This is why front-loading is a thing in MLM’s like Mary Kay. There is simply no market for these products, which is why the big money makers are not getting rich selling product. They are making a killing on all the front-loading going on in their own downline.

The product is just a cover. Remove the product and still charge $600 to “play the game” and the system continues to function exactly as it does today. Naked pyramid schemes actually have a higher upline payout than product-based pyramid schemes, because there is no product cost creating a drag on upline cash flow.

Sorry ladies…it was never about the product. Meaningful income in MLMs like Mary Kay is impossible without downline front-loading, and lots of it.

  2. Heidi’s comment, ugh. Miss Conceptions is stupid, off-putting, and is no one’s BFF. If someone put tried to impress me with those insulting videos it would guarantee NO sale from me and I’d block them.

Whoever came up with that idea is a person who thinks they’re “hip with the young people” but is just another creepy uncle (or aunt).

  3. Gail is right tho, Two Faced Better Than Sex Mascara is still recommended used and talked about by the YouTube well known beauty influencers and its been out since 2013. Korea skin care equivalent products have taken over the market for the last 5-7 years, along with brands catering to either the tweens or the women with mature skin.

MK is consistently late to the latest MK developments and trends or changes/discontinues favorite items. If they even looked at the longer lasting Corporate Make up companies they would see that Clinque has been selling Black Honey consistently for over 50 years, Estee Lauder double wear foundation has been sold consistently for 30+years, and of course Chanel No 5 has been sold for over 100 yrs.
Theres no way for MK to compete with that as they don’t particularly have a consistent product line, let alone keeping up with the trends or evolution of the products scientifically.

  4. Or, crazy notion, I know, just accept that this person isn’t going to become your customer and move on.

You don’t have what she wants, and the more you waste your time trying to bamboozle her, the more annoyed she’ll get and she’ll wind up just blocking you anyway.

  5. Well I finally watched the Miss Conceptions promotional videos, and I have to say WTF is MK thinking that this would appeal to ANYONE much less the millennials or whoever they’re targeting?? So cringe. But fascinating to watch and wonder what marketing person was able to sell this ad campaign to the company. Desperation…the world’s worst cologne.
