Mary Kay Only Cares About Profits

Tonya Vice is a Mary Kay sales director who was energized by the recent double credit promotion. From March 1st to March 15th, consultants received double credit on their wholesale orders up to a maximum of $1,000. This double credit really doesn’t mean anything in the outside world, but is used to calculate the totals needed for on stage recognition at Seminar. Tonya shared how she used this promotion to motivate her very small unit of 34 consultants.

If the team received $5000 wholesale by March 15th, she’d hold a drawing for a Michael Kors Purse! She’d throw in $50 cash if they reached $10,000.

These would earn one ticket:

  • Every $250 wholesale order
  • Every sharing appointment
  • Each new team member

These would earn three tickets:

  • Complete $600 wholesale
  • Qualified party ($200 in sales with 2 bookings and 2 shares)

And 5 entries for:

  • $1000 wholesale
  • New Team member (meaning they’ve placed their own $600 great start order)

This promotion gave Tonya the best start to March she’s ever had. She and her unit ordered $6500 in wholesale. There were daily updates in her Facebook group, reminding everyone how close they were to the finish line, and also where they stood to earn the seminar recognition.

Tonya sure seems to love Mary Kay and promoting the company to current and future consultants. However, she does have a lot of company complaints as seen in other comments in a different Facebook group. In this February thread about My Shop, Tonya complains that the company is now just focused on profits.

Tonya described the hustle she’s used since starting her Mary Kay Business. She even recruited her mom!

Tonya admitted the buzz is off from virtual parties, She needs to focus on holding more in person events if she wants to make the top 5 in her seminar.

Tonya shares that she’s increased issues with products shipped by Fed Ex. She’s had multiple orders arrive with damaged boxes, which the company will require a claim to replace.

Tonya is tired of the company taking things away from them.

And finally, Tonya was not happy there would be no free boxed lunches at Seminar.

Tonya, why are you so anxious to make money for a company that shows you at pretty much every opportunity that they really don’t care about you?

  1. Spend $250, $600 or $1000 for chances at a drawing to get a $99 purse? Why not just buy yourself the purse?

    Normally, raffle tickets are significantly cheaper than the value of the item offered. Not on this case! Please, ladies, open your eyes to this blatent exploitation.

  2. Exactly what I was thinking, DJ. I wonder if she’ll even hold the drawing, similar to the ones who promise cash prizes then move the goalposts so that they don’t actually have to pay up.

    Under PA law, raffles are verboten for for-profit businesses, require a small games of chance license, there are maximum limits for prizes and you can’t extend credit for ticket purchases.

    Drawings must be conducted publicly and be subject to verification. And you have to award the prize advertised.

    I doubt states would be interested in pursuing small stuff like this, but it’s still dishonest.

  3. I started to realize how dumb this all was when I wondered why I was exhausted all the time. Trying to hype people up constantly who cannot hype themself up is like trying to outswim the block of cement died to your ankle.

Look at how Tonya talks about her own family and how she put friends in quotes when they didn’t want to buy more from her. “People who want to be a customer will appreciate you way more than family and friends.” Wow. She complains how the company only cares about profits and yet for her own family and non MK friends she has no use for them unless she can extract profits from them. Hypocrite.

    Kathy, we will never be friends. I can tell she’s a pest. If her answer to a question of how she’s doing is a bitchy non-answer to “shut them up,” she’s not a nice person, and she’s probably not doing well.

  5. Tonya Vice My “friends” attended my debut and bought but then told me that they had already helped and they were done.

    Seems like Tonya thinks friendship and loyalty is a one-way transactional activity. They are lucky to be rid of her faux-friendliness.

    Note that Tonya has to motivate her team by “bribing” them. That only goes so far. And the bribes have to get bigger and bigger.

  7. If Tonya is bragging about always being in the top 20 of her seminar for court of sales~ she’s nowhere close this year~ as of the end of February she’s number 209 in court of sales for her seminar;) guess the myshop is hurting her chances for top 20 glory

    • I was watching Kiki Chanel about Lipstick Lesbian’s attempt to get women to test market their products rescued from the depths of patent hell. Price was mentioned as a non-stumbling point.

    • Great point! That breaks down to $400 in sales per person in a month. And her unit NEVER does this. That means her unit members are not selling, on average, $100/week. IF they sell all of that at full price (ha!), that’s $40 “profit” per week per person, and they can’t even do that.

      Tell me again how this “business” is a money-maker?

  9. The whole PCP or whatever they call the quarterly mailing program was not to help you do more business. It was to retain you customers contact info if just in case you quit. so, they can reassign to another consultant.
