Tips For Moving Up NOW in Mary Kay

Written by TRACY on . Posted in Business Basics

They make it look so easy to move up, don’t they? If you’re not moving up in Mary Kay, you must not be working hard enough. Those who are really moving up legitimately and making more money are few and far between. But pieces like this will make you think you’re the only one not moving up!

Do you want to really, really move up in your business today…right now? If yes, then look at the following list of things that are necessary for you to grow and realize your dreams now. These were shared by Sr. Cadillac Director Jeanette Thompson, Duluth, Ga….Thank you Jeanette for your insights!

THINGS NECESSARY FOR DAILY MOMENTUM

ASK yourself daily….”did I….

  1. AFFIRM my dreams & goals….write them out on a 3×5 card and repeat a inimum of 10 times in the morning & 10 times in the evening! (remember to put them in present tense)
  2. SPEND 30 minutes on the phone…booking hostesses…booking interviews? Book 2 appointments every single day Monday – Friday
  3. SELL products today?
  4. ASK at least 2 people today about the MK Career? “May I share some information with you about what I do?” (remember your objective is to set the appointment) …dialogue might go something like this: “Hi Jane, this is Linda, do you have a quick minute? Great! I am working on an awesome goal this week to share how we make our $ with 5 women…and I thought of you….if you can help me out by listening and giving me your opinion, I will have a FREE lipstick for you!?” then set up the time and tell the story!
  5. CALL my new team members for a “check-up” check (1-3 minutes) Purpose of this call: inform them of the training events, next MK event., or when she’s available for observation, which way has she decided to open her business the PS/POWER START or BUSINESS DEBUT (you’ll need to get it on your datebooks)..and get them to it! Always work with them on the “next step”…don’t confuse them by taking them beyond the next step… Remember, Mary Kay has always known that we need an “EVENT” every 3 months .. a Retreat, CareerConference (which you DO want all your team members to attend!)/Seminar…and of course EVERY Weekly Success Event!
  6. FOLLOW UP with everyone I gave tapes to this week, & my hostesses?
  7. MAKE the best use of my “prime people time”? (9 am – 9 pm) (If I had a postponement, did I get out the door & meet new people or work on the phone for that two hours that I had designated to my business? Remember…Wal-mart is open 24/7!!! There’s always a way, when the WHY is there!
  8. STAY AWAY from energy draining activities and people?
  9. ASK MYSELF…”does this activity help me make $ or move up?” If not…don’t do it!
  10. CALL my director within the last 3 days to give her an update on my activities/results?
  11. HAVE 2 GUESTS at each and every guest event and every Success Event?

One thing I would like to add…if you see someone you are intimated by…remember…IT’S NOT ABOUT ME…IT’S ALL ABOUT HER! If we ever feel the slightest bit intimadated by someone we would like to “approach” about trying the product/listening to the career….remember this the fear is your ego….UNZIP that coat and drop it!!!…IT’S NOT ABOUT ME…IT’S ALL ABOUT HER! ASK!!!!

What part of any of that sounds like owning your own business? Especially the trolling Walmart in the middle of the night thing.

It all sounds straight out of some creepy dystopic science-fiction story.

Behold, Stepford Wives created for the explicit purpose of glorifying and gratifying Mary Kay. Financially maybe and not sexually, but some of those at the top are so perverse in all other respects, I daresay the scheme might arouse them too.

If everything you do serves to move your business forward then where does family fit in? For that matter, does God & church only serve to further your business. Talk about upside down priorities!

I have to assume that #8 is intended to cover GOD and family, too. :)

Yep, smack the bottle out of your baby’s hands, burn the kids’ storybooks you used to read at night.. hell, burn your lingerie too because “fun time” with your hubby ain’t building your MK busines.. unless you can recruit the voyeurs outside that is ;)

“don’t confuse them by taking them beyond the next step” – a real business makes long-term plans
“don’t confuse them by taking them beyond the next step” – excuse me, but this ignores and underestimates the education, knowledge, skills, business acumen, and common sense of women. Perhaps you are speaking about “the little woman” of the 1960′s who was taken care of by her spouse and needed help so she wouldn’t be “confused”?
This phrase is insulting and arrogant.

” my “prime people time”? (9 am – 9 pm)” – perhaps prime for someone in MK, but the people I associate with have already been at work for two or more hours by 9am so please don’t think you can possibly talk to me at that time of day about over-priced, over-promoted, under-performing cosmetics. And depending on their circumstances, 7p-9p is right in the middle of helping exhausted school-age youth wrap up their day and get to bed, or it is prime time for packing tomorrow’s lunches, paying a few bills, throwing some laundry in the washing machine, and checking a couple of urgent work emails before falling into bed. So please don’t call me in the evening either.
It might be YOUR (IBC) prime people time but please don’t waste mine!

The whole plan crashes and burns at #2: SPEND 30 minutes on the phone…booking hostesses…booking interviews? Book 2 appointments every single day Monday – Friday

Right. Who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters?

This is a perfect example of how far MK is behind the times, parroting outdated and ineffective sales methods. Caller ID and answering machines pretty much killed this tactic. The National Do Not Call List wiped out the remnants. No longer can you open the phone book to a random page and start dialing.

Years ago I did the Dialing for Appointments bit for several months when trying to sell insurance. I was just dialing “warm leads” (people who had checked a “more info please” box on a form), and the company name showed up on Caller ID, so I expected at least SOME people would answer the phone. WRONG!

I found out that leaving a voice mail message made no real difference. The number of return calls I got from my enthusiastic scripted voice mail messages was exactly zero. Once in a while, very rarely, someone picked up the phone on a subsequent call because I left a voice mail message. About as rarely, someone picked up the phone on a subsequent call because I didn’t leave a message and they were curious about why I kept calling. Either way, most of those who answered quickly cut me off with “sorry, not interested, don’t call back” .

Did you know that when no one answers the phone, you can exhaust 100 “warm leads” in about 30 minutes? If you get an answering machine (which only happens about half the time) and leave a brief enthusiastic voice mail message you’ll can still exhaust 100 “warm leads” in about one hour.

I also found out that the best way to tick off a prospect was to be a pest. You are a pest if you make an unanswered sales call to any number more than once a day. You are a pest if you make an unanswered sales call to any number more than twice a week. You are a pest if you make an unanswered sales call to any number more than four times in three weeks. And if you do make unanswered calls to any number for three weeks, you need to retire that number from your call list for at least 30 days if you’re ever going to have a chance of turning that lead into an appointment.

They saw your number on Caller ID. They heard your voice mail. They got the message. They’re not interested right now, and continuing to call will only ensure that they’ll NEVER be interested. Do YOU get the message?

Following Daily Momentum Guideline #2 (spend 30 min a day dialing), and calling each number about once a week for three weeks, you’ll need to start with at least 250 warm leads. Three weeks later, when you’ve worn out your welcome with those first 250, to keep dialing you’ll need a second 250 warm leads. Six weeks later, when you’ve worn out your welcome with the second 250, it’ll be too soon to start calling the remnants of the first group again, so you’ll need a fresh 250 (total 750 so far) to keep dialing. Then, of course, before you can start calling the first 250 group again, you’ll need to replace the 100+ names in that group who already told you to get lost…

This means that in order to keep dialing 30 minutes a day, your “new warm leads to be called” list is going to head north of 1,000 names in about three months.

How many names did you get from those fishbowls last week? Fifteen? Ten? Remember, it’s ALL YOUR FAULT if you run out of names to call.

But let’s not be negative. Anyone can do it. You can do it. And even if you don’t do it you can still fake doing it to keep your MK “team” motivated.

“#11, HAVE 2 GUESTS at each and every guest event and every Success Event”

So what happens when you’ve run through your entire list of friends, family, and people who owe you a major favor… where do you get your two guests per event, then? Are you supposed to round ‘em up at gunpoint?

Nice goin’, Jeanette. Way to make people feel guilty for things they can’t control.

I have a friend who is getting involved in MK and I told her I’d support by purchasing things from time to time and I will. But from what I’m reading this is no different than the attempt I made at Avon. I couldn’t be as pushy as they wanted, or “work my business” in the right way. NOt my speed.
