Everyone Has the Same 24 Hours

Mary Kay Ash gives some words of wisdom at a 1991 conference. She tells us how everyone has the same 24 hours per day, and it’s all about how you use those hours. Also:

  • Create a 6 most important things to do list
  • Use your weekly plan sheets to plan each week and day

If you ever wonder why Mary Kay is full of directors and NSDs giving “advice” that doesn’t actually tell a consultant how to get women in the door, here is why. Mary Kay Ash never gave real advice. She gave sound bytes that people continue to quote. Time management? Great! But if I don’t have any customers to manage, what does it matter?

  1. We all have the same 24 hours but if (general) you can afford a housekeeper, nanny, secretary etc. then you have just made yourself a bunch of spare time do spend how you like.

    • Hiring a housekeeper back when I was deep in the pink fog was one of the best decisions I ever made. We have had the same housekeeper for over 15 years now. She loves my dogs, does a great job, and is a blessing in our lives. Yes, hiring her frees up time for things like writing papers for school or going to work at my J-O-B. I’ve found over the years the heathens that live here also tend to keep things a little neater around the house.

  2. This has got to be some of the most tone-deaf advice ever to those struggling. Not just in MK, it’s one of my universal pet peeves. As Destiny Angel rightly points out, you are forced to use your 24 hours differently if you can’t afford a staff. Seriously, if you are in a position where you don’t now nor ever had to do your own laundry, clean your own house, or cook your own food, I don’t want to hear this advice from you!

  3. It’s sort of funny because other than “put out facial boxes or “wear your nametag upside down in Target” or “send gift bags to chemo patients” there really is not much. More than once on here, I have read that directors are perusing the net to find ideas and they land on pink truth which ultimately says “do you ever wonder why no one really tells you how to get customers? just a sad little irony .

  4. I saw a meme recently along the lines of “Beyonce has the same 24 hours in the day that you do” and I think my hair just about caught fire. Because the unspoken half of that sentence is “so why aren’t you out there Beyoncing, you lazy, indigent slob?” Beyonce has the resources to hire someone to take care of every picayune and tedious thing that would get in the way of being Queen Bey. People who are living paycheck to paycheck don’t have that luxury. Or the advice columns that say “give up your daily Starbucks and avocado toast and save $$$”. How does that apply to the folks who can’t even afford store brand coffee and Country Crock? So out of touch and condescending.

(Beyonce herself is all-around awesome. It’s just whoever came up with that meme who needs a case of prickly heat right where it counts >:(

    • “Beyonce has the same 24 hours in the day that you do” … and she has EIGHT nannies for her 3 children, housekeepers, chefs who shop and cook, gardeners, chauffers or limo service, laundresses … to free up her time to do her JOB, which is being an entertainer and executive.

      • And she’s powerful enough that she can make appointments when she wants them and not at the beck and call of the layers of music management. The Powers That Be accommodate Beyonce over smaller often less well-known or niche artists, regardless of their talents.

    • Mary Kay’s advice makes me think of when Kim Kardashian’s advice to women in business was “get off your f*cking a** and work. It seems like nobody wants to work these days.” Struggling women don’t need condescension from out-of-touch wealthy women.

    • It was 30 C* today in Quebec and humid. I’ve been so sweaty i had to shower twice so far. It looks like half of the sub-division’s children took mental health days judging by the beach. Prickly heat would just cap today nicely.

      *That’s 90-something F for my Southern neighbours.

      • No one would pay one iota of attention to KK if she wasnt rich and famous jus for being famous. She did not grow up like most people, Most of us did not come from rich backgrounds and do work very hard. She has never had to do “real” people type of work and really, who want to be famous for a sex tape that launched her so called career.

  5. I absolutely ABHOR this statement that we all get the sam 24 hours in a day No, we don’t. Some people can function on less sleep than others, some people are taking care of children, elderly parents, dealing with their own health concerns, etc. Some people have a higher energy levle than others, some people are going to school, working or working more than 1 job. Their are a multitude of reasons that people don’t get as many hours available to them as someone else. As others have pointed out some people can afford housekeeping, cooks, etc. Not available to most of us. We all may get 24 hours in a day, but not all is equal b/c of various issues going on in someone’s life.
