It’s Not You, It’s Mary Kay

Written by Parsons Green

Codie Nelson is a struggling Mary Kay consultant. She frequently posts for advice on Facebook.

In 2023, she posted that she was not able to work and Mary Kay was her only option for income. No one was buying or responding to her.

In February 2024, she posted again she wasn’t making sales. No leads. No one was interested.

In November 2024, she was featured in a front page article here where she discussed losing her spark. She loves the products. However, she can’t get a returning costumer. Her area is oversaturated with consultants. Thousands of dollars spent trying to find anyone to purchase from her.

She posted last week that she is still having issues. Can’t find costumers. The stress over selling enough to keep her discount. Has never sold enough to qualify for the monthly consistency prize. Is disheartened by seeing the “success” other consultants brag about on social media. And even sadder to see Codie say that she thinks something is wrong with her.

I believe Codie may be nearing the end of her time with Mary Kay. Hopefully she will find her way to Pink Truth and realize she is not alone. The opportunity is a terrible one. Shame on Mary Kay for preying on people like her.

  1. Codie, its not you. You are describing the reality of these pay-to-play endless-chain recruiting schemes. Most of the “buying” going on in Mary Kay is done by the sales folks in the downline. Many of these “successful” ladies you see on social media are faking it…by purchasing most of the qualifying product themselves. Its a ruse…don’t fall for it.

Your time will be better spent with a traditional part time job that actually pays you for your hours worked, instead of the other way around. Isn’t it rich that MLMers look down on regular jobs, while the rest of the world cringes when they encounter MLMers?

You don’t need more reasons to leave Mary Kay…it is time. And please don’t let the sunk cost fallacy keep you in.

  2. It’s not you, Codie. Your area is oversaturated with consultants, the products are overpriced, and as you’ve seen people just don’t want anything to do with Mary Kay.

Furthermore, consultants bragging on social media are lying, or at least fudging the truth. “Sold $300 at a party!!!! I earned $150 in an hour!!!!!!!!” Not. She knows as well as you that whatever profit she made was eaten up several times over by hostess gifts, samples, discounts, travel, and time spent getting ready.

The reason why your director and the huns on Facebook have no answers for you is because they’ve got nothing themselves. Success in any MLM just isn’t possible for 99+% of people in it.

Return your inventory, block your director, get your friends back, and look for an actual job with an actual wage.

It is possible to work remotely, and under the ADA employers have to provide reasonable accommodations for people and can’t refuse to hire based on health.

  3. CodieI have gone through my personal Facebook friends list probably 6x now asking if they would join my personal group (snip) they tell me very rudely leave them alone.

Codie And 35 left me on read they didn’t bother to message back after messaging them for the second and third time.

Codie, no-one is interested. They’ve told you “NO“, they have left you on read and if you keep nagging them, they will block you. It’s this relentless pressure for sales which is alienating your family and friends, slowly and steadily you are eroding your relationships.
More importantly, you are indirectly telling people that you don’t believe “No means No” which is not a precedent worth setting especially to young, impressionable people.

  4. I wonder if Codie’s SD will read the post about her not helping or training Codie.

If she “loves” the products so much, she should quit MK and buy them from a struggling consultant. (They’re ALL struggling.)
