Google “30 faces in 30 days” and you will see a ton of pages from Mary Kay sales directors promoting this as a way to jump start your MK business. It’s so easy to do! That’s how you sell the product! Well of course having 30 women show up for skin care classes would get you some sales. The catch is…. how do you get them there? To get 30 women at classes, you’d have to hold 7 to 10 classes (with 3 to 4 women at each class). In order to hold that many classes, you’d have to book 15 to 30 classes (because of the high rate of cancellations).

To book that many classes, you’d have to talk to 30 to 60 women. Where on earth are you going to find that many NEW women in a short period of time, engage them each in a conversation, work the conversation around to Mary Kay, and end up asking them to hold a class?

That’s one of many big lies in multi-level marketing. They make it seem so easy. If you’re willing to do the work, you’ll get the results. But how do create that many opportunities with strangers? It’s next to impossible.

Here’s part of a document designed to help you get “unstuck” in your Mary Kay venture:

1) RUN A SALE! My favorite Sale is “Buy 2 Products – Get your 3 rd for ½ price” OR “Buy 3 Products – Get your 4th one Free!” Call up all your regular customers and tell them you are going for #1 in your unit and you are running a Customer Appreciation Sale! This is it! Today and Tomorrow Only! I always say… “Is there anything you are running low on or would like to try new?”

2) 30 FACES IN 30 DAYS WILL FIX ANYTHING! 30 Faces in one month will fix ANY problem you have. 30 faces (or 5 shows of 6 people, etc) will give you new faces, new sales, new bookings, and new recruiting prospects! Now, doesn’t that fix any problem you have? My script? “Hi Sallee, this is Jen with Mary Kay! I am so excited! I am in a HUGE contest to do 30 faces this month and I had to call you first because I knew you would help me out! Can I borrow your face? I will let you buy $75 worth of Mary Kay for $25 if you share our time together with 3 friends that I have never facialed! What do you say? This week or next?” NOW, LET’S THINK ABOUT THIS: She buys $75 for $25 – we pay $37.50 for the $75 in product….she is paying $25 of it, so we are only out $12.50 – PRETTY SWEEET , HUH? And, you are getting great sales from the 3 guests plus bookings! ROCK ON!

3) 100 CUSTOMER BASE GOAL! 100 CUSTOMERS is where it’s AT! Regardless where you are today, doing 30 faces in one month 3 months in a row, will give you 100 customers! Soooooooo, 100 customers is ONLY AS FAR AWAY as 3 months, but can be closer if you do more faces quicker! With 100 Customers, you have repeat business, reorders, DAILY! Could you get excited about your phone ringing EVERY DAY in addition to your regular skin care classes and team building checks? How about your first $3000 profit month in MK? YES!

4) INTERVIEW 10! INTERVIEW 10 PEOPLE that are good qualified prospects (customers, interested in another source of income, trust you, love the product, etc) and you will most likely recruit 4-5 of them! Can you say “ON-TARGET FOR THE CAR” immediately!!!!!!!???????? An average check for someone on-target for their car is in the $300-$500 monthly range! Wha-lah!

5) COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR DIRECTOR DAILY ABOUT YOUR WEEKLY GOALS! COMMUNICATION with your Director daily is a must when you are wanting to move up! Is there a reason why you can’t call her daily? Email her? Share your goals? Plan with her? I am here for you to make your dreams happen! Let’s get it together and WORK IT AS A TEAM!

All of these sound so simple! Just sell some products! Just get more customers! But the reality is much different. It’s next to impossible to generate enough new contacts to make this a reality. Consistent retail sales in MLM are a myth. When the MK sales director is trying to recruit you, she asks you if you can follow a plan. You think you can. You don’t know that the plan is impossible to follow, because you can’t possibly meet enough women to make that plan a reality.

Moreover, you’re stuck fishing in the same limited customer pool with every other consultant in your area. Once you eliminate the ones who already buy from someone else because she gives her product away for just about free, the ones who’ve already been approached by every other hun in town and are kind of over it, the ones guilt buying from a family member or friend, etc where do you find these people?

    You don’t.

“Sell more stuff, make more money, durp!” is some Patrick Star-level economics right there. What they don’t explain is how you sell stuff to people who either want nothing to do with Mary Kay or already have someone who gives them big discounts.

    You can’t.

Of course you can talk to your director, who will tell you to book more parties to sell more stuff and make more money, durp! but when you ask for specifics she’ll give you the same meaningless platitudes and useless advice as shown in yesterday’s post. Is she hosting multiple parties per week? Does she have heaps of inventory laying around because she’s not selling it, either?

    She’s not, and she does.

When I was a kid, I’d drink hot tea, sort of. In an attempt to make it taste like instant iced tea mix (ie pure sugar with some tea powder thrown in) I’d add tons of sugar to it, and was invariably disappointed when the tea didn’t get any sweeter after a certain point, and turned into gross tan sugar sludge. Just like tea getting saturated with sugar, the market is saturated with MK product, and no amount of stirring or wishing is going to change the situation.

    • Yep– there aren’t that many people the WORLD to make the MK numbers work. Hasn’t anyone stopped and looked at the how improbably it is? sign up 5 women , who find 5 more women, who find 5 more women. And you are talking about a mostly female population that is of make-up wearing age. It is IMPOSSIBLE! Why can’t they see this?

Until I started reading PT, I had no idea how MK exploits women. This is not a woman friendly company.

      • Don’t you just wanna go save them all? Caitlin Underwood is one. That girl hustles so hard and just can’t make it. She’s in Pam Shaw’s “lineage” too. Watching her 50 day face last June and still not get her car back was the final thing that told me this would never work. If Amanda Wright doesn’t finish million, it doesn’t work. She’s worked every Friday and Saturday for years. Given up so much. Yall. Stop!

  2. It’s my first June not thinking about Mary Kay. I forgot there was joy in the summer! Last June I had 1 foot out, but even though I hadn’t pushed in a couple of years, the mental toll it takes is enough to make you sick. June push is also July booking to start the year strong and survive enough faces around seminar week also. There is NEVER rest. Sabbath doesn’t exist. Except for NSD daughters probably.

I’m so happy. My mental state is better than it’s been in 10 years. I just wish I could get these 10 years back.

  3. Director, I know you want me to focus on seeing 30 faces in 30 days. Can I ask you for advice?

When you were a consultant how much time did you spend trying to find those 30 faces? How many people agreed to participate but either ghosted or cancelled last minute? Did you ever calculate a per hour total on how much you were making based on the time spent and the products sold?

If this is so easy, why aren’t you doing it now and why do you need ME to do it?

  4. I swear to God…all these tactics “Run a Sale, 30 Faces/30 Days/ 100 customers/ Practice Interviews/ Talk to Director Daily” are the same things that were pushed on me over 20 years ago. They don’t work. Get out and return your product. Get some money back instead of losing more. If these training tips haven’t changed in forever do you really think your “outcome” is going to be different. You are not making NSD…it’s not going to happen. They like to fill your head that it’s possible, but in reality they are scamming you to make more money.

  5. There is SO MUCH in these “tips” to dispute, but let’s just break down one point. I’ll even use Mary Kay math at face value and pretend it’s true (ha!).

    “30 faces in 30 days = 100 customers in 3 months!”
Month 1: 7 parties of 4 people + 2 that you pick up somewhere.
–Week 1: 1 Party, Hostess is already a customer, 3 new guests = 3 new customers
–Week 2: 2 Parties, 1 hostess is already a customer with 3 new guests, 1 hostess is a guest from last week, 3 new guests 1 repeat guest from last week = 6 new customers
–Week 3: 2 parties, 2 hostesses are guests from last week that you’ve rebooked. 4 guests are repeats from previous parties, 2 guests are new = 2 new customers
–Week 4: 2 parties, hostesses are guests from last week, no new guests because they’re all repeats = 0 new customers

Month one total: 11 new customers. If we repeat that math consistently, it’ll take you NINE months to get to 100 customers.

BUT WAIT! We haven’t accounted for recruiting yet. You’ve also interviewed 10, per our fabulous advice from above. And you’ve recruited FIVE. GOOD FOR YOU! Who are those 10? Likely, they’re the hostesses and best purchasers from the parties you held this month. So, of 7 parties, you’ve recruited 5 hostesses. And what do the hostesses’ friends do when their friend joins? They are her customer, of course.

So, you may have added 1-2 customers. And most of them probably purchased a pity lipstick or mascara and don’t really want to hear from you ever again. But you’ll keep faithfully sending a catalog every quarter, and it’ll only take you 1-2 quarters to LOSE MONEY on those customers.

Real winner of a business plan, isn’t it?
