Don’t Join Mary Kay to Have Fun

One of the common “defenses” of multi-level marketing and the fact that 99% of people lose money in it… is that people just joined to HAVE FUN! They didn’t really want to make any money. They just wanted to meet people and have fun.

In this clip from an appearance I did years ago on HuffPost live, I debunk the myth of joining to “have fun” with the help of Robert FitzPatrick, founder of Pyramid Scheme Alert.

  1. If I want to have fun “playing with makeup”, I can take the $100 for the starter kit and the $225 plus tax plus shipping for the activating product order and the $40 for the ProPay subscription and go to a department store or Sephora and have a fabulous time.

This is true. I should have put the word “play” in quotes. I didn’t mean to sound like I thought it was childish for women to enjoy makeup. I was more trying to comment on the infantilizing language and imagery. I personally don’t care for my hobbies, passions, skill sets and profession as being “play.” I also don’t like being referred to as a girl as in “girl’s night out.” But that’s just my preference.
