20 Years of Pink Truth
Earlier this month, Pink Truth quietly celebrated 20 years in existence. Okay, that’s not true. There was no celebration because I forgot! So we’re celebrating now.
Honestly, I’m as surprised as anyone that we’re still here 20 years later. When Pink Truth launched as Mary Kay Sucks on July 4, 2006, I thought it would serve as a place where a few frustrated consultants could share some gossip, compare notes, vent a little, and maybe save a handful of women from making expensive mistakes. Instead, it turned into something much bigger.
Over the last two decades, Pink Truth has published thousands of articles, hosted hundreds of thousands of comments, and welcomed millions of visitors looking for answers they couldn’t find anywhere else. We’ve laughed at the ridiculous training, dissected compensation plans, exposed recruiting tactics, and documented story after story from women who discovered that the “opportunity” wasn’t what they were promised.
None of this would have been possible without the dedicated members who have written countless articles over the years and the millions of women who have left comments. It has been a labor of love, but the helping hands, moral support, and enthusiastic participation of so many has been necessary and appreciated.
We’ve heard every prediction imaginable: You’ll be shut down. Mary Kay’s lawyers will get you. You’ll run out of things to write about. You’ll never take down Mary Kay. Nobody reads your site anyway. Just wait long enough and the site will go away.
Well… here we are. Twenty years of facts and fun.
But the real story today isn’t Pink Truth. It’s Mary Kay. For years we were told the company was stronger than ever, sales were booming, the opportunity was unlimited, and the future was brighter than ever. But now… the company is circling the drain.
Sales have fallen dramatically, assets have declined, and operating losses have piled up. The family trusts haven’t received distributions in years. Headquarters went up for sale. Even longtime insiders are asking hard questions about leadership and the company’s future.
It’s almost like numbers don’t care about motivational speeches.
One of the things I’m proudest of isn’t exposing Mary Kay. It’s helping women realize they weren’t crazy. For years, consultants were told that if they weren’t succeeding, they just needed a better attitude, more inventory, more bookings, more recruiting, or stronger belief. Then they found Pink Truth and discovered many thousands of women had experienced the exact same thing.
It turns out the problem wasn’t a lack of positive thinking!!!! The problem was (and still is) the business model.
We’ve celebrated women who paid off debt after leaving Mary Kay. We’ve watched former consultants build successful careers and businesses outside of MLM. We’ve helped families understand why Mary Kay was creating conflict in their homes. We’ve connected women who thought they were completely alone, only to discover thousands of others had walked the same path with this horrible company. Not bad for a website that supposedly would disappear any day now.
Of course, we’ve had a lot of fun along the way. We’ve laughed at ridiculous seminar dresses. We’ve rolled our eyes at endless “new” products that weren’t really new. We’ve watched sales directors insist every year was the “best year ever,” even while their units quietly shrank or disappeared altogether. We’ve collected enough motivational clichés to last several lifetimes.
Some things never change, but others do. Twenty years ago, it was almost impossible to find honest information about Mary Kay online. Today, women have choices. They can read experiences from former consultants, examine court filings, review financial information, and make informed decisions before investing thousands of dollars. I like that progress.
So I’m not just celebrating an anniversary for Pink Truth. I’m celebrating for every woman who trusted her instincts instead of the sales pitch. For all of the consultants who realized they weren’t failures and it wasn’t their fault. For families who avoided unnecessary debt. And for every person who chose facts over fantasy. I’m even celebrating those who said we’d never make it this long. Thanks for the motivation!
Here’s to twenty years of truth, a little sarcasm, and reminding women that asking hard questions is never a bad thing.

Thank you, Tracy, for this forum. I found you 10 years ago as an IBC who was starting to see th light. Pretty sure I searched “Mary Kay scam” and “stumbled across” the site. I can honestly say that the last 8 weeks or so have shown the strongest content in that 10 years: from the family in-fighting to Parsons’ insider info, from the absolute farce of the Toupins to the latest contract update and all the clues pointing to a major change in the business model. Pink Truth’s golden age is just beginning!
Many thanks to Tracy and others on this site! Like many others, I went to this site in 2008 when I was told, “Don’t go there! It’s all negativity and lies!” I had already started the process of walking away from it all, and yes, everyone here confirmed that I was NOT crazy. That I was NOT a “lazy looser.” That I knew what my eyes had been seeing, even though I was told something else (lies upon lies).
Pink Truth isn’t going anywhere. I sincerely hope we continue to attract others to the light and help them see what a scam MK really is.
Any time I read an article or a blog post about MLM companies on sites that don’t have a focus on MLM (including many sites that are widely read), inevitably I’ll find a comment dropping a link to Pink Truth.
You have given more people a genuine opportunity – an opportunity to get real numbers and real experiences ranging from from brand new IBCs to those who were thisclose to becoming an NSD – than anyone associated with the company, including Mary Kay (insert multiple married names here) Ash ever did. You have helped more people than Mary Kay ever did, by orders of magnitude.
You have exposed, using real numbers and sound accounting principles the myth of “Mary Kay Math”; you have exposed the rampant and egregious religious manipulation; the incessant love-bombing of those who appear to have healthy credit limits; the normalization of predatory tactics (“No doesn’t really mean No”); the devastation it causes to families, and have exposed the hypocrisy of the so-called “Leaders to listen and look up to”, and so much more. You have laid bare the inner workings of MKCorp alongside the financial devastation and inner turmoil this ugly scheme causes for all but the very, very few who takes a chance on the flopportunity.
Take a bow, Tracy, you’ve genuinely earned it!
And keep going strong! Pink Truth is needed now more than ever. BIG changes are afoot.

In 2006, there were FIVE seminar divisions and HUNDREDS of NSD’s. Mary Kay has exited the New Zealand and Australia markets. Today there are just three seminars and 106 NSD’s! I’m including Pam Garner who miraculously finished qualifications the last day of the month she turned 65, the mandatory age for retirement as an NSD.
I like contributing because it shows in the consultant’s own words and posts how hard it is it succeed in this business. If you were recruited by Chelsea Adkins, Taylor McKnight, Kelly Green, Casie Leopard, Cleta Colson-Eyre (insert name here) they frequently discuss how they can’t find recruits. They just need five more faces. 50 more orders. They’re so close to Cadillac, Equinox, the top trip, the diamond ring, they just need YOU!
The company is changing and changing fast. Who knows what it will look like on Pink Truth’s 21st birthday? I know I’ll be celebrating the contributions of everyone on this site! And a special toast to Tracy, THANK YOU for starting this site.
If it wasn’t for PT I probably would have never sent back inventory because of the pressure from my director begging me to stay in. PT showed us how to do it without being harassed by the leadership. Tracy and company showed us how to recoup some of our money before it was too late and to that I offer a great big Thank You!
Mary Kay is changing and I think there are going to be a lot leaders hung out to dry in the near future.
It’s a new Seminar year, the perfect time to get out rather than start over with some ridiculous goal.

Yes, she is. She has been a director for 40+ years. Not a top director mind you, last time she made unit club was about 5 years ago.

How I got here…
I’ve been retired from the corporate world for 20 years. Shortly before retiring, I was waiting for the train to go to work, and struck up a conversation with a young man on the platform. He was one of the daily train commuters, and I guess he felt comfortable asking me, “Do you know anything about Amway?”
I said no, but said I had heard of it. He told me his brother and family had recently gotten involved with Amway and that their relationship had changed…and was terribly strained. He was visibly upset. I felt so sorry for him.
When I got home, I did some digging about Amway on our “new” Gateway computer and came across a free download of the book, “Merchants of Deception.” WOW. I was hooked and couldn’t stop reading.
For some reason, Mary Kay popped into my head. I don’t know why, as I had never used MK and knew of no one who sold it or even used it. Bingo…I then found Mary Kay Sucks on the internet…now Pink Truth.
I describe myself as being here for “infotainment.” I have received a GREAT education on Mary Kay and on MLMs in general. I had zero knowledge of MLMs prior to PT.

There is no shortage of former MLM consultants who admit “This was WAY harder than anyone said it would be”. Or, “my area was over-saturated so I couldn’t make any money”, or I would have been successful “if only ____.” I’m a former consultant and Pink Truth was first place I’ve seen that explicitly calls out the fact that losses of the downline are baked into the system, that directors in any MLM make the bulk of their (measly) earnings on new recruits’ initial orders. Not on consultants who build a big customer base and consistently sell, but on orders from new recruits. That’s a completely different animal than the more benign statements above.
I found it so interesting to hear the inside scoop on directorship & car co-pays, and just how LITTLE my former director was actually earning. I’m grateful to former directors who shared their stories here.
I actually “stumbled” onto “Mary Kay Sucks” in late 2006-early 2007 by searching “Arbonne scam.” My then-MIL, a serial MLMer with vision boards tacked up on her walls and boxes upon boxes of never-sold inventory from several MLMs (which became everyone’s dreaded Christmas and birthday gifts for years after…) was all pumped about how “different” Arbonne was and dragged me to their weekly meeting where I couldn’t understand how I could possibly be the only one there who saw it for what it was. A google search a few days later led me here and it turned out, all MLMs are the same. I’d never been involved in MK (not sure if MIL ever was), nor even so much as put MK anything on my face (I always thought of MK as gaudy, trashy, “old lady” makeup) but I kept reading and coming back on a regular basis.
Today, PT is my guilty pleasure, a “reality show” of sorts, especially with updates on the likes of NSDs past and present, as well as all the never-to-be NSDs, career DIQs, following the “will they or won’t theys” as they “find a way/make a way” (*wink wink!*) each and every month and at year end, and like gluttons for punishment, turn around and repeat the entire process ad infinitum in some sort of bizarre self-inflicted torture ritual.
I also love seeing former bots who finally emerge in a daze from the malevolent pink fog, like deer in headlights, unsure of what to do or where to go from here, as those who’ve walked miles in those same pink heels support and encourage them as they begin new chapters of their lives that don’t involve fake BFFs on grown ass woman playdates, icky warm chatter, and cringey social media posts begging for “help” that make others unfollow them faster than you can say “seminar.”
And last, but certainly not least, I find immense joy in watching the steady, inevitable foundering of the doomed SS MKC as it sinks into the abyss where it belongs. It’s about f’ing time. And good riddance.

Twenty Years. Starting July 5, 2006, I shudder at wondering how many individual women “started” on that date, through July 4, 2026. I only know that’s it a number I will ask someone to provide because I know I can’t even come close.
How many consultants and directors and GONNA BE AN NSDs has Pink Truth outlasted by one year, five years, etc.
How many silent readers have dropped in Pink Truth and ultimately dropped out of the insanity, whether it was MK or any other MLM?
I wish I could quantify the lives SAVED, the families healed, the careers retrieved, revived, resurrected, created, after Pink Truth sparkling truth?
I found Pink Truth through being a devoted reader of Etiquette Hell where it was mentioned. I don’t know exactly when that was but I see I joined Discussion Group in 2018 so I am still QUITE THE NEWBIE lol. All I know is that I had been trying to decipher the madness of MLM – WHAT IN THE NAME OF GOD IS IT!!! – since 1985, and it wasn’t until I got to Pink Truth THAT I FINALLY FOUND OUT!!!! 33 Years it took me to find out! I was marked a time or two for such things, I specifically remember the Legal thing, but without knowing how to spot an MLM, they seemed to not want ME hee hee.
I love this group. I am so grateful for always having a place to escape to, to know I will learn something no matter what. Maybe related to MLM, maybe related to a 1000 other topics from the witty, humorous, hyper intelligent denizens of the COMMENTS lololol alone!
Tracy, I’ve thanked you and your amazing support team countless times, but it just doesn’t get old. You have all given so much to so many that also has nothing to do with MLM and I’m just so happy to be one of the fortunate.

Egads, I feel OLD!
My healing really began at Pink Truth well over a decade ago. I always thought that I was the only director who couldn’t make the Mary Kay MLM system work. I must have not had a high enough deserve level. I must have let others ick on my wow. I must not have bee-lieved enough.
Tracy provided the one outlet that showed me the problem was the company and its predatory system, and slowly but surely, I was able to come out on the other side.
Tracy, I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done here and I know thousands of others feel the same way.
And Suzy – I love YOU more!
That MK Lady ™ who nagged the bejeezus out of me will never know what a good thing she did for me. Without her I’d never have found this site. I really knew nothing about MLM in general, and MK in particular, before then, and what an eye-opener it has been! I’ve learned a lot and met loads of intelligent, interesting, accomplished people (who don’t seem to mind my snark and perpetual grumpiness – bonus for me! :D)

I found Pink Truth about 10 or 12 years ago because a Facebook friend kept posting about Mary Kay, and photos of herself and others wearing red blazers. Sure looked culty to me, so I googled it to figure out what was going on.
I was primed to agree with Pink Truth because back around 2006, MLMs overtook my circle of young moms. I referred to these events as “paying parties,” and eventually made a policy of declining all such invitations. I couldn’t afford it! It ruined my community. I found Pink Truth, realized just why MLMs were so “off” and why that FB friend of mine was so over the top about it, and have never left.
Besides, it’s hard to find an old-school blog and discussion forum! This has been my lunchtime reading for over a decade. Thanks, Tracy.
I’ve been reading Pink Truth for a long time. After years of believing I just wasn’t good enough, I never had the courage to comment. But reading everyone’s stories was incredibly healing because I slowly realized I wasn’t alone. It wasn’t that I had failed Mary Kay—it was that the system was designed to make so many of us feel that way.
What Pink Truth gave me wasn’t just information—it gave me permission to trust my own instincts again. Reading story after story, I realized I wasn’t the only one who had ignored my common sense because I thought everyone else had figured out the “secret.” They hadn’t.
For years after I left, I still placed one order a year because I genuinely thought I loved the products. Or at least I thought I did. Then one year I ran out and started trying other brands. I quickly realized there are so many products out there that are just as good—or better—without all the MLM baggage attached.
What still breaks my heart is seeing someone in my own family get recruited. She’s on a very limited budget and really couldn’t afford it. Her Mary Kay products are sitting on a shelf in the spare bedroom while she washes her face with Dial soap because she doesn’t think she’s “worth” using the products. She’s convinced she’s going to sell them instead.
That may be one of the saddest things Mary Kay has taken from someone—not just her money, but the belief that she’s worth using the very products she was persuaded to buy.
So, thank you to Tracy and everyone who has shared their stories over the past 20 years. You may never know how many people have quietly read this site, found the courage to leave, and reclaimed their confidence—even if they never posted a single comment.
I am grateful to you, Tracy, for this site. When I joined Mary Kay Sucks then Pink Truth, I didn’t realize how manipulated I was, and in reality had been in a business cult. While I eventually broke even and made a little money (no intentional recuriting), I came to realize that my experience was not unique (the half-truths, deceiption, etc.). I thought it was me.
My business died a slow death and I blamed myself for a multitude of reasons. Since I didn’t leave Mary Kay with debt, I didn’t have the same trauma that others did. This site opened my eyes to what I observed in others in my unit and with my one uninentional recruit. And because my husband and I pastor churches, it also helped us navigate policies in our churches about how buildings are used.
My stance on MLMs (or direct sales) has cost me some relationships in churches. When invited to an MLM party, I politely decline but add, “if you ever have a get-together without an mlm as the focus, I’d love to come!” Of course I list some bland reasons like fairness as a pastor’s wife, etc. In my last church, we had parties with our small group all the time just because – “Dress as high school” or “Scavenger Hunt!” In my current church (a different state/culture) I’ve never been invited to a party that didn’t have a purpose. How sad.
If you are in a church and are a post-MLMer, host a party with a theme. Invite people (include your pastorsand wives/partners) and just enjoy! As a PW, I wish more people would do this.
