A long-term Mary Kay loser, Debbi Shury, saw fit to comment on my “freedom from Mary Kay” post.  It seems that Debbi missed the whole point of my post. I didn’t say that anyone held anyone hostage. But Mary Kay IS a cult that uses manipulative tactics to keep people in the system. She’s also not sorry, and we’re not spewing garbage.

We’re exposing the FACTS about Mary Kay for nearly 2 decades.

But the most interesting thing about Debbi’s comment is how she got to Pink Truth and why she’s bothering to comment. If she’s so successful and happy in Mary Kay (for 37 years!), why is she spending any of her precious time on our site?

  1. Yes, what was she doing here if the MK life is so rosy? A good question, my dear Watson, a good question. Perhaps the same thing I was doing in my “MK career” as I watched all my money disappear and the big shots appear to be super successful.
I wondered what I was STILL doing wrong, after twenty years! I had the feeling that if I knew how to recruit people and sell them on the MK Visa card right away, then load up that credit card as quickly as possible with as big of an order as I could get them to stomach, I could be a winner in Mary Kay! But that felt so terrible. I didn’t believe in “debt.” I didn’t want to have “debt.”
It wasn’t debt. My director told me so. She said it was an investment. She knew at any time that I could open my store and sell all of my investment and have not only my original money back, but twice as much. There should be NO hesitation on purchasing lots of products. I was virtually the same as having an ATM in my home.
Except those cleansers didn’t just run out the door and turn into cash. Satin Hands didn’t just turn into $36 with an $18 profit. I already knew that from experience. So it was hard for me to try and convince (manipulate) a single mom to jump into MK and “invest” in $1,800 worth of credit card debt. At 29.99% APR (that’s what mine was by the end when I finally paid it off and closed it).
Ladies, this experience has a name. Cognitive dissonance. When two ideas hold space in your brain and they conflict with each other. It appears that they are BOTH true, but that can’t be. One must be false. Our brains like to solve problems. Which one is true? Which one is false?
Pink Truth helped me sort it out. I knew the truth I was lived was not helpful to me or my children or the new people I was met because of MK. I couldn’t sell them on that credit card and the debt it would require and be able to sleep at night. That conflicted with what my director told me. But I chose the correct path for me and my children – leaving MK.
We hope you come back, Debbi, and investigate your truth. I don’t think you are a loser. I think you’ve been badly mislead and manipulated by a company that profits BILLIONS of dollars on your pure of heart intentions. Or, perhaps you are still consumed by the manipulation. It’s ok – it takes at least seven attempts to leave an abusive relationship, and in my mind, the relationship we all experience(d) with MK is a manipulative one.
Do yourself a favor and pay attention to YOUR truth.

  2. If what you were saying was false, Mary Kay Corp would sue your pants off for defamation. No suit. Proceed.

  3. According to Ms. Shuri, we spew garbage and yet she didn’t take time to point out one piece of garbage written on the site and why it was incorrect.

  4. I have been part of MK for 26 years. Despite doing everything that was suggested and more to succeed, much to the detriment of my financial and emotional health, I couldn’t get to goals I had. I had more success than most, but not the ultimate success I was reaching for. Along the way, I saw people manipulating, the products, and their team members. Manipulating those they wanted to be on their teams. I never did that. I believe that is why I didn’t grow any more than was actually possible. The lack of growth was confusing to me. But now that I have healed emotionally and financially, I can see that manipulation is a huge part of this company. I can’t say that it’s coming from corporate, but it is there. Sometimes I think that corporate turns a blind eye to some of the lower level manipulation, which I guess, makes them complicit. They have to have a somewhat hands-off approach for legal reasons.

Now, if someone is just selling the product honestly, doing their best to love on their clients. Letting them go if they don’t want to buy or answer their phone calls, then, I’m sure you can love your MK business with a clean heart. But, if manipulation to meet prospects, book appointments, sell products, get referrals, do interviews, add team members and get those team members to work is the key to success, lots of people are part of the “cult”.
