Emily Schuette posted a thread asking directors for their best Seminar Hacks. She suggested wearing your heels around the house with fuzzy socks to get your feet ready! Also, be sure to put earring backs on the back of all your pins when putting them on your jacket.

Carrie McHargue brings her husband! He carries her purse and takes pictures.

Taylor McKnight, future nsd (LOL) and still-not-million dollar Director, coordinates with her unit on what products to pack. They’ll share products once they get there. I’d be worried about cross contamination by sharing makeup, deodorant, and who knows what else – but I’ve never been to an Empowered Leaders retreat.

Cynda Worrell brings an extension cord. With four (or more) consultants in a room – there’s never enough outlets. Casey Evans brings a ziploc bag with dawn soaked sponges so she can clean her coffee mug daily.

Celeste Bell brings her own makeup mirror. MaraJosette King swears by earplugs.

Casey Evans also wears the jewelry she offers to her unit as prizes. She will sell the sizzle. Alex Barker brings empty boxes. She will ship things home instead of paying for an extra checked bag.

Robin Marshall packs all her formal gowns in a vacuum bag! Jessye Nichols loves this idea, but wonders how that will work when it’s time to pack them up to go home. Robin Marshall uses her tushie to squeeze all the air out! In fact, she does this at home too! She gets her bags at Dollar Tree.

Amber Hoban has groceries delivered. She also has room if you’re in the Emerald Seminar!

Bridget Penberthy brings cereal. She’ll grab milk and a spoon from Starbucks on her way to that day’s session. Um. Bridget – are you paying for that milk??????

Maureen Frasure writes her schedule on a piece of paper. If she looks at a schedule on her phone, she could miss picture taking time with friends.

Allison Gibbs drives to seminar – but will park at the aiport. The Lyft to and from the hotel along with the lot fee is still cheaper than paying parking charges at the hotel.

Amy McCann brings a cooler – because there is never enough room in the hotel fridge. She’ll pack all her outfits together.

All of these hacks are great and inspirational to anyone in or out of Mary Kay. My favorite is from Bridget Penberthy. What a way to advertise that you run a successful thriving business than by sharing you steal milk from Starbucks!

    • My favorite travel hack is VRBO/AirBNB. Everyone gets their own room, and you have a real kitchen for healthy, home-cooked meals before and after the day’s activities. That kitchen also give you the ability to pack healthy lunches and snacks to get you through the day. Split a rental car for the group or Uber to/from the event, depending on proximity.

Disentangling from the hoards will give you a freedom you never thought you could feel at a big event like this. You will look fresh and rested daily, because you will be. You can also head back for a break or a nap, alone, any time you need it.

At the end of the evening, you and your roomies can share a bottle of wine after dinner and decompress from the day before sleeping in your own quiet, comfy room/bed.

  1. This sounds awful! Being packed in a hotel room like broke college kids on Spring Break is tacky and degrading. Now they are being encouraged to steal milk from Starbucks – and this entire horrible trip only puts them deeper in debt.

This is not how a rewards and recognition trip works in the real business world.

    How fun.

  2. If you do go, don’t drag your poor spouse along. Seminar is boring for consultants. I can’t imagine how dull it is for husbands.

  3. If you leave anything “valuable” in a public space, wait over 30 days later before blasting security and housekeeping all over social media bringing international ridicule to both you personally and Mary Kay Wagner Rogers Eckman Weaver Miller Hallenbeck Ash’s company.
