We’re back again with our good friend Somer Fortenberry, checking in on her progress at the end of August. This is being written on August 31 as a follow-up to our post from last week, wherein….  Somer’s mid-month numbers were, to be kind, abysmal. But since consultants hold their orders till the end of the month, surely they’ll be on track by August 30^th, right?

Wrong!

With hours left in the month, Somer’s area of more than 40 sales directors is clocking in at less than $97,000 wholesale. Since the minimum monthly production for a director to keep her unit is $4,500, she’s got a lot of directors in trouble. Her August 30 numbers show less than $2,500 wholesale per director, so we can guess that there will be a LOT of “last minute miracles” (ahem… directors maxing out yet another credit card) on August 31 this year.

Recruiting numbers are dreadful as well, with her area directors each averaging about 1.5 new recruits to their units this month. Those are not recruits who have actually ordered anything, mind you, just the number who have signed on the dotted line and gotten whatever this month’s version of a “starter kit” might be. Apparently only 12 of those have ordered any kind of inventory.

What about consultant earnings? Well, we see that only 33 consultants have earned the coveted star consultant designation. For the uninformed, that indicates consultants who have ordered at least $1,800 wholesale during the quarter. With the quarter wrapping up in a mere two weeks on September 15, it’s unlikely that that number will grow significantly.

If consultants are being honest about their sales (ha!) and not ordering more than they need (ha ha!), $1,800 wholesale breaks down to $300 in retail sales per week. If consultants are selling everything for full price (HA!!) and only spending the Mary Kay recommended 10% on overhead (HA HA HA! Remember, seminar happened this quarter), they would be earning a maximum of $120/week as star consultants.

So, in an area of over 40 directors, less than 1 person per unit is earning a maximum of $120 per week in this glorious opportunity, “the best opportunity in the world for women.” Sure, Somer. Keep touting your success. From my seat, it looks a lot like failure.
